"A Good Time Will Be Had by All!"

February 2020

CLAM and our non-profit development partner Eden Housing submitted a proposal on January 21, 2020 to rehab the 36 townhomes and former dormitory building as affordable housing in a first phase, and engage in a community development process to bring other potential community activities to the site in a subsequent development phase. This submittal was in response to Marin County's purchase of the Coast Guard property from the Federal Government in November 2019, and the subsequent Request for Proposals (RFP) that invited bids from development entities to repurpose this neighborhood for homes that will be in alignment with local wages and salaries.

Why partner? CLAM invited Eden Housing to be our partner at the Coast Guard. In this collaboration, the two organizations will share equally in decision-making to refine the site plan, balancing community needs and financial feasibility. CLAM will offer community perspective and voice. Eden will provide the finance, construction, and property management expertise that is necessary for this project to be a success. CLAM chose Eden because of its excellence in affordable rental housing across Northern California, as well as its organizational values, including community-centered affordable housing, that align with CLAM’s mission.

How can you get involved?
  1. SIGN OUR PETITION in English or in Spanish by February 18 to show you want CLAM to win the bid.
  2. If you belong to an organization, ask them to endorse our bid with a letter of support by February 18. Here is a Sample Letter of Support and background Context and Talking Points.
  3. Share your thoughts with the Board of Supervisors via email:  BOS@marincounty.org
CLAM invites your input and questions on our work related to this neighborhood! We look forward to more conversations to plan and revitalize this important community asset.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE 2020:
CLAM Members Give Us STRENGTH!

If you are a CLAM member, you know that the more of us there are, the more we can accomplish. The growth in CLAM’s membership over the years tells the story of widespread support for homes that working people, families and seniors can afford. That story goes out to community leaders, policy-makers, and to our members themselves, all of whom are part of our success. CLAM members have helped us get this far on the path to new homes and a new neighborhood on the former Coast Guard housing site in Point Reyes Station.

Help CLAM bring in 100 new members over the next two months.
If your membership has lapsed, or you haven’t joined yet, you can swell the numbers just by clicking here and joining (or rejoining) now.

If you are a CLAM member already, invite a friend or two to join with you. The more voices that join yours, the greater our strength in creating homes and building community. Here’s a note you can send on to your friends:
  • Are you a member of CLAM yet? They’re working hard to create more affordable homes out here in West Marin. Every membership helps them do more! Join me in becoming a member by clicking here.

Thank you for helping make our 2020 Membership Drive a great success!

CLAM recently convened two events we call the Women's Empowerment Workshop Series: Housing Solutions Through a Woman's Lens. At these events, it became clear that co-housing and multi-generational housing are solutions of great interest. We considered creating a workshop on the topic, but then learned of an online conference on "Affordable Co-Housing" on February 22nd, 9am - 3pm. Perfect!

Here's the link to the conference where you can check out the agenda for the day, and register if you decide to participate.  https://www.cohousing.org/2020-online-affordable/

We are taking advantage of this online "Affordable Co-Housing" conference as an opportunity to extend the Women's Empowerment Series and bring women together. We will gather 9am - 3pm on Saturday, February 22nd so that we can hold our own in-person discussions while also participating online. If you are interested in joining us, email Ruth for location and details.

Our Movement is Growing!
Community Land Trusts Preserve Community Assets &
Make the Cost of Living More Affordable

The Community Land Trust (CLT) movement is gaining momentum! You may not know that CLAM and our sister organization, Bolinas Community Land Trust are part of a growing movement for community ownership of land. While most CLTs focus on making homes more affordable by purchasing or holding property in trust for the community – off the traditional (capitalist) market and thereby avoiding escalating property costs – there are also examples of commercial space being owned by the community, like Bo-Gas in Bolinas.

Recently a group of low income women and their children ("Moms 4 Housing") won a victory after squatting in an uninhabited home in Oakland for several months. You can hear about their story in Michael Krasny's interview here and listen to the segment "Moms 4 Housing" from KPFA here. The Oakland Community Land Trust has a wealth of resources on their site. Learn more about the CLT movement in a New York Times article here. The California CLT Network is bringing together land trusts across the state, to support perpetual affordability, stewardship, and community control.

In future editions of CLAMbites, we will continue to share news and progress in the community land trust movement.
