Performance Opportunity
All students are invited to participate in a performance for the residents at:
River Terrace Retirement Community
Sunday, March 15 @ 3:15-4:15pm
Generally, we play in the assisted living area, but this year they asked that we play in the Health Care Unit.
This is a great service opportunity for students and an easy way for them to perform pieces they've been working on in January / February.
Please contact Amy if your student would like to participate.

Deadline Extended
Is your student interested in composing their own piano piece and receiving feedback from a real-life composer?
Then this is the opportunity is for you.
Students will work with their teacher to write out a composition of their own. Amy will submit the sheet music and a recording to the festival coordinator. Within approximately 6 weeks, the student will receive a comment sheet and an award (if their composition places.)
Students are judged in accordance with their age category. The state-wide winners in each category will get their composition entered into the 5-state division competition for free, winners from there move to a national competition!
The state has extended the deadline and also reduced the entry fees! The composition must be completed and submitted to Amy by their lesson the
week of April 6-10.
Cost: $25
(Checks should be made out to Studio 88, as Amy must submit one payment)

The Value of Providing Acoustic Piano
for Your Student's At-Home Practice

When we started our daughter in piano lessons at the age of 7, we had an almost 100-year-old piano that lived through my grandmother’s life and was handed down to us. It had some chipped keys and was difficult to keep in tune for long at the bass/high treble ends. After a year or two, even at that young age, she would complain about the condition of our piano in her practice.
Once we knew she was serious and would continue into the future with piano, we took an opportunity to upgrade to a well-cared for 35-year-old upright from a retired family friend. It has been a good investment.
During our kitchen remodel this year, we were blessed to stay at her grandmother’s house which has a beautiful baby grand piano. Our daughter enjoys playing on it because she says the sound is so rich. When I asked her how she would compare playing on a keyboard vs baby grand piano, she said it would be as different as eating a delicious gourmet meal or a McDonald’s hamburger! :)

Gene Marcus Piano Camp & Festival

For students looking for a more advanced piano-intensive experience, the Gene Marcus Piano Camp & Festival is a week-long summer camp,
June 7-12.
Students attend daily lessons, masterclasses, workshops, and enrichment classes. Each day features an evening concert. Students must audition. Please talk to Amy if you student is interested in auditioning.

Science Says Piano Players’ Brains are Very Different from Everybody Else’s
The piano is a beautiful instrument. Its players often come across as mysterious; these people who have spent hundreds of hours practicing scales and repeating phrases over and over again to reach sheer aural perfection. To an audience member it can have a similar effect to watching a magic trick or a ballet: it is so skilled and beautiful it almost seems impossible, a feat of the Gods.
But what is going on underneath all of this hard work and magic? It certainly isn’t luck that such an effect can be made.
