Updates from the Legislature

The Senate unanimously approved a resolution last week recognizing Idaho Women's Day as a state holiday, an idea introduced by the Idaho State Historical Society. Idaho Women's Day will be celebrated annually on March 14th.

The purpose of the holiday is to recognize the hardships women have and will continue to face throughout history. Women have made incredible landmarks in their fight for equality, however, there is still more work to be done.

Idaho Women's Day will shed light on an important topic: the need to establish equal rights for women in Idaho and in society at large.

House Rejects Daycare Bill

Last Tuesday, the House voted 23-44 against passing HB-312. The bill was introduced by the Health and Welfare Committee and sponsored by Democratic Minority Leader, Illana Rubel.

The purpose of HB-312 was to put restrictions on daycare businesses and make them safer for children. Some of these provisions included mandatory background checks, required safety certifications, extended training, and the implementation of an emergency response plan. I supported this bill because I believe the safety of Idaho children should be a top priority.

We Will Miss You Elaine!

Representative Elaine Smith is retiring this year. I have had the privilege of working along side her for two years. Representative Smith has been in the legislature for almost 20 year. She has served under 4 Governors: Kempthorne, Risch, Otter, and Little. We will miss her dearly, and wish her the best of luck on this new chapter in life.
