P&Cs need to know...

P&Cs add so much!

We'd like to welcome back all the wonderful volunteers across ACT public school parent associations. We know it's not just back to school for the kids!

To celebrate we have put together this infographic showing just how much P&Cs added to public schools last year. Share it with your community to encourage everyone to be part of something great!

Finishing up?

If your time at the P&C is ending it's so important to handover well to the next committee to make sure your knowledge and experience is not lost. Unfortunately, our member survey showed that about three quarters of new committee members are not getting a useful hand-over. Never fear! We have templates to make putting together some handover notes a breeze.

And if you no longer wish to receive this bulletin, please use the unsubscribe link at the end of this email - and a big 'thanks' from us for the contributions you have made.

AGM? OMG!

Yes it's AGM time and we have a great Information Sheet to explain what it is all about plus this handy checklist for you to work through to get ready for the AGM and essential tasks afterwards.

The AGM is an important event, but needn’t be daunting or overly formal. In fact, it is important to keep it friendly, as it is often the first P&C meeting that parents attend. It is also a great time to let parents know what the P&C is about so that they will want to continue to be involved. Recapping the P&C’s achievements over the past 12 months can be a great way to showcase the value you add to the school (use our template for a quick President's Report).

We also have templates here for
  • AGM agenda and minutes
  • Committee Report (this forms part of the treasurer's financial report)
  • Nomination and Declaration form for your new committee members.
The use of all these is outlined in the Information Sheet.

Air quality measures

The Education Directorate's website has information for parents (FAQ) about how schools will handle air quality issues, and the guiding documents that schools will be using. We welcome parent feedback on the approach and how it works in your school (email or call 6241 5759). We were consulted by the Directorate and think the process looks sound, but would prefer monitoring to be used in school buildings. Long term, building quality and ventilation will need to be addressed in our schools.

Volunteer Grants

Federal Government grants of between $1000 and $5000 are available to help community organisations to support their volunteers, for example buying small equipment for volunteers or for the reimbursement of volunteer fuel, transport or training costs.

To apply, you need an ABN (not all P&Cs do, look it up here). You need to put in an expression of interest through your local MP -  Alicia Payne (Canberra), David Smith (Bean), or Andrew Leigh (Fenner). Check their websites for further details. Most expressions of interest close Friday 14 February.
Council happenings...

Our activities

The Council office was closed over the break, but we continued to advocate for parents and P&Cs, especially in the areas of air quality responses, Coroavirus information and support for P&Cs providing After School Care undergoing a difficult procurement process.
We have also been investigating ways to ease parking difficulties at school events like fetes and will have advice on this before this year's fete season.

Playgroups in primary schools

Do you have a school-based playgroup? Council’s Early Learning Officer is currently contacting school-based playgroups to learn more about their experiences setting up, engaging with and supporting parents and children. If you’re willing to share your experiences please email. .

Special needs transport

We are hearing that special needs transport services to some parts of Canberra have been disrupted and that some families have not received good information about these services. Please feel free to share your experiences (email or call 6241 5759) as we will have a chance to feedback parent experiences.

Upcoming events

  • Executive Meeting, Tuesday 11 February, 7pm start
  • General Meeting including presentation on school funding 25 February, 6:45 for 7pm start. Ends 9:30pm. 51 Fremantle Drive, Stirling. All welcome.
