President's Letter

Dear Cumberland Community,

In the beginning of 2019, our goal was to organize, form a governing board and become our own nonprofit corporation. We accomplished all of these goals.

We celebrate our accomplishments and progress made possible by your belief in the need for the Cumberland church building to continue to exist. Whether it’s connection, preservation, history, service, education or other aspects of community, the survival of this building matters. My pledge to you as president is to keep my ear to the ground to better understand how you define community.

I would like to thank our current volunteers, sponsors and donors for their time and dedication. However, I must make the request for even more dedication in 2020. We need more volunteers, sponsors and donors to step forward to help us reach our 2020 goals.

Our goal for 2020 is to raise money to move the Cumberland building to the lot located at Santiam and Pine. We held ourselves accountable and accomplished our goals for 2019 and will do the same for 2020-with your help.

Please join us, sponsor an event, volunteer for events or donate to our cause. We will have open house hours each month-stop by, ask questions, make suggestions, get to know us and allow us to get to know you.

There is a special place at the table just for you. Please join us.

Warmly,
Emma Eaton, President, Cumberland Community Events Center

Happy New Year!

The start of a new year, let alone a new decade, makes us feel as though anything is possible. These new beginnings create hope that we can start over or improve ourselves through goals or resolutions.

About 60% of us make new year’s resolutions, most of which seek to improve our health or wellbeing by losing weight or exercising more. These resolutions make the connection that health = happiness.

Cutting carbs or working up a sweat can be challenging however, and often something that we don’t look forward to. The good news is there are other ways to improve our health and happiness: by practicing acts of giving and volunteerism.

Giving and Volunteerism

Donating time and resources to an organization can improve your health by creating an overall sense of happiness. The Charity Aid Foundation determined that 96% of donors claim they feel a moral duty to give to others or organizations. I believe this feeling rings true particularly for Oregon residents who have a history of helping one another going all the way back to the first settlers of the state. It would follow then that Oregon residents have twice the motivation and natural desire to do good.

The desire to do good was shown repeatedly at the Cumberland this past year with the many generous gifts we received and we could not be more appreciative.

Volunteering can be just as good for the mind and body as giving. Volunteering one’s time to a cause or organization can improve one’s mental health through the creation of meaningful connections with others. Standing side by side with others who believe in a cause as you do helps create feelings of unity, fellowship, and generates a sense of purpose. These feelings help combat symptoms of depression and are even linked to an overall lower mortality rate.

Since joining the CCEC group in July of 2019, I can attest that there is nothing more gratifying than joining a cause that is driven by personal beliefs.

The Cumberland’s 2020 Resolutions

Like everyone else, we have set our own goals to improve our organization in 2020. Our resolutions focus on fundraising and volunteer recruitment which will provide multiple opportunities community members to improve their health and happiness by volunteering or donating.

We will be hosting more events in 2020 than ever before, and we will need volunteers to help staff them. Most of our events will focus on continuing to nurture and support the wellbeing of the community, in addition to fundraising.

Our goal for 2020 is plain.

To move the Cumberland to the corner of Santiam and Pine so the restoration process can begin.

We want each and every one of you to be a part of this journey. The Cumberland belongs to us- it belongs to our history, the history of Albany. The simple truth is we cannot reach our goals without your continued support. All Cumberland events are presented by volunteers, and donations in any size are always appreciated.

So, make the resolution in 2020 to join us. Try something new this year.

Did You Know???

Celebrating the New Year can be traced back to the year 2000 B.C. in Mesopotamia. Mesopotamians acknowledged the significance of the start of the new year by participating in New Year’s resolutions.

In Mesopotamia however, resolutions were quite different from the resolutions we make today. They ranged from attempts to appease  gods, pay off debt, or return borrowed farm equipment to one’s neighbor.

Thanks for reading and your continued support. We can't wait to see you soon at one of our upcoming events. As a reminder, we are now accepting online donations!
