ART LEAGUE NAMES ANSEN SEALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR 2020

Billy Keen, Artist of the Year committee Chair, announced that Ansen Seale, photographer and well-known creator of public art has been chosen as SAALM's 74th Artist of the Year.  Seale was selected unanimously by a panel of three out-of-state jurors after a six-month process of review.

Seale's time-based works of photographic art have been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally and have been collected by corporate institutions and private collectors. He received the Bernard Lifshutz Award in the Visual Arts from the Artist Foundation of San Antonio. Seale works with a special digital panoramic camera of his own invention. His camera has the ability to capture a vertical slice of the scene over and over in rapid succession, in effect swapping the horizontal dimension of the photo.

Keen commented that the selection of Ansen Seale reflects a shift toward honoring diversity of media at the 108-year-old San Antonio Art League. Last year's Artist of the Year, Jane Dunnewold, is a non-traditional fiber/mixed media artist.

Seale will be honored with a full-gallery retrospective of his work from September 9th until October 18th, 2020 at the Art League galleries, 130 King William Street in San Antonio.

Tales from the Vault . . .

Once upon a time there was a plan to create a safe, state-of-the-art home for the San Antonio Art League's priceless permanent collection of paintings.

Thanks to optmistic persistence, member support, expert consultation Harry Jewett and Associates, and invaluable funding from the Beth Eidelberg estate, this tale is rapidly turning into a happy reality.

Wiring, security, and lighting are in place. Our long-time contractor, Ruben Tamez, and his crew are in the process of building the custom storage system that will house the individual artworks (see above). Stay tuned for details on the Big Move!
MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR ONE OF ONE SAALM'S MOST POPULAR ANNUAL EXHIBITS, THE COLLEGIATE, OPENING AT THE BEGINNING OF CONTEMPORARY ART MONTH ON SUNDAY, MARCH 1.

Prepare to be inspired and impressed by this exhibition representing the best in student art from colleges and universities in San Antonio.

On exhibit will be works in all media, including clay, painting, video, photography and printmaking. These university students push the limits and narrate the future of fine arts through their concepts and expressive skill.
REMINDER!

March 7th is the deadline for entry submission for the 90th Annual Juried Exhibition.

You can download a prospectus with all the details here.

Submitting your artwork is easy - go to this web page and log in to EntryThingy.

Jurored by Gilbert Vicario, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs and The Selig Family Chief Curator at the Phoenix Art Museum, accepted artwork will be eligible for a total of $10,000 in awards.

Looking for the perfect twice-a-month getaway to an art-filled, peaceful environment nestled in a beautiful historic neighborhood?

Interested in meeting like-minded people from all over the country?

Do we have a job for YOU !

The San Antonio Art League & Museum is always encouraging its members to learn about becoming a Docent.  As an all-volunteer arts organization, we rely on our membership to help us keep the doors open and welcome visitors to our beautiful King William galleries.

Requirements:
  • An interest in local and regional art (you don’t have to be an artist, but artists are welcome to apply)
  • A time commitment of just five hours twice a month on a chosen day of the week, Tuesday through Saturday.
  • Willingness to be responsible for opening (10:00 a.m.) and closing (3:00 p.m.) the Galleries/Museum.
The pay is not great (actually, it’s non-existent), but the hours and benefits are fantastic. You may even recruit a friend to share the docent duties with you.

If you’d like to give it a try, let us know and we will pair you with one of our Senior Docents for a day to see if it’s a good fit for you.
Contact 1st VP Dona Walston, Executive Director Bill Kurtin, or President Lyn Belisle Kurtin if you would like to join us – it really is fun.

Please know how much your support, your participation, and your membership means to us. Make this year one in which you volunteer at the Art League as a docent, serve on the Board, get involved through the Members Gallery and Small Works Gift Shop.
