Bend in the Road Inc.
February 2020

Welcome to Bendy Bytes 2020!

The Bend in the Road committee had a small break over the feastive season but now are back in action planning some exciting projects and events. Keep watching this space for details on what's happening around The Bend!

February Neighbourhood Sundowner and Munro Art Competition

The next Neighbourhood Sundowner will be held on Friday 21 February, 6 pm  to 8 pm at Doubleview House (cnr of Hancock St and Scarborough Beach Road). At this sundowner the prize winners of the Munro Art Competition will be announced. All shortlisted entries will be displayed inside Doubleview House.

Food will be provided but people can also BYO food and drinks. A barbecue will be available for use. Why not make a night of it and bring your picnic blanket to enjoy the park!

Prior to The Bend sundowner event Doubleview House will be holding its own sundowner from 4 pm to 6 pm. It is hoped that the Doubleview House 'crew' will stay on for The Bend's evening of activities. Similarly, you (of The Bend community) are invited to pop in before 6 pm to meet the Doubleview House 'crew'. You can find out about their fantastic activities and join in on the next activity of interest to you.

Micro grants up and running

Micro grants are small funding amounts provided to locals for local projects. The Bend in the Road Inc is ecstatic to be offering micro grants to The Bend community. Small grants of up to $500 are available for locals to progress local projects in keeping with The Bend’s strategic plan and annual priorities in the following focus areas and priorities for 2019/20.

  1. Live and Local: bringing The Bend to life with music, events and celebrations fit for our beachside and urban lifestyle
  2. Growing Green: making The Bend blossom
  3. Pavement performances: relaxed tunes and carpark jazz
  4. Bendesque artworks
  5. Magnificent Munro
Applications for micro grants are now being received and two grants have already been awarded, both for the installation of street libraries. Annie of Guildercliffe St will install a street library near the 'Lulu' mural (shown below on left and found on Annie's boundary wall that also adjoins the carpark of the Guildercliffe St shops). This street library will feature artwork by David Smith, the creator of Lulu.

Rikki of Northstead Street, another grant recipient, will be installing a street library on the outside of her front fence. Rikki (shown below on right with son Flynn) hopes the library will be used by the local kids and parents that often gather to play and talk on the front verge under the shady street tree. Rikki encourages people to stay for a while by placing chairs under the tree and opening the front gate when it's time for the kids to play.

Congratulations Annie and Rikki! And thanks from all of us at The Bend for your great community spirit.

Other applications in the pipeline include projects involving a bird bath, garden verges and equipment to display community art. Bend in The Road Inc would love to see more applications coming in so apply here!
