SDBC Winter Classic Pickleball Tournament and Luncheon
Saturday, February 22nd, 2020
9AM-1:30PM

As mentioned in our February Newsletter sent out on Monday, we will be having our Winter Classic Pickleball Tournament, Skill Challenge, and complementary luncheon here at the church on Saturday, February 22nd. If you are not playing in the tournament, we would encourage you to come out and cheer everyone on. And, we want everyone, spectators and players alike, to join us for the skill challenge and complimentary luncheon that follows. It will be a great time to socialize.

The tournament will be a round robin format where players will be split into three divisions: Advanced Men/Women (Level 3.5+), Intermediate Men (Level 2.5 - 3.0), and Intermediate Women (Level 2.5 - 3.0). There will be ten players in each division. Spectators and players are invited to participate in a fun "Pickleball Skill Challenge" after the finals, then everyone will join us for a wonderful complimentary luncheon put on by Mario and Brenda. We will finish off the luncheon with a short word from our guest speaker, before handing out prizes for tournament winners.

Tournament Signup
Online registration for the tournament will begin on Thursday, February 6th at 3PM, via the church website.  Registration will close on Tuesday,  February 18th. Cost is $5 to play in the tournament to be paid on the day of the tournament. If your division is full, please sign up for the corresponding waitlist. Past experience has indicated that we need people on the waitlist to fill in for last minute cancellations.

Luncheon Signup
If you would like to join us for the complimentary luncheon, you are asked to register online as well, to help us plan for food and table setup. All spectators are welcome and encouraged to join us for the complimentary luncheon.

Volunteer Signup
We also need volunteers so that the tournament and luncheon run smoothly. This year, we will need helpers for the setup on Friday afternoon along with food prep. On Saturday, we will need scorekeepers, timekeeper, and skill challenge helpers. You can sign up to help via the link above.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us or check out our website for further information.

Pickleball Levels Self-assessment

A number of players are finding the USAPBA self-assessment too cumbersome to use. You may find this assessment easier to use. Give it a try.

General Rules of Play at SDBC

  • Please sign in for your session but do not arrive to sign in more than 30 minutes before the session you wish to play in begins. Also, please do not sign up for others who are not there with you when you arrive.
  • In consideration of others playing at the current session, please do not enter the gym any earlier than 5 minutes prior to the start of your session. Please remain outside or in the church foyer.
  • In fairness to others, please only attend a maximum of one playing session per day (exception: you can attend one Skills Session & then one playing session on a Saturday)
  • Remember to pay the $2 per player fee at the beginning of your session.
  • Wear gym shoes to prevent injury from slipping.
  • Bring your own water bottle.
  • Please refrain from coaching fellow players unless they have asked for coaching.
  • When there are 4 or more players waiting, all games end when one of the teams reaches 9 points. No 2 point difference.
  • After your game, place your paddle in the rack oriented for winner or non-winner. The next four players to go out will be according to the same orientation of the closest paddle to the beginning of the rack. Alternate between winners and non-winners for next court availability.
  • At the end of the final session of the day, please help clean up and put away all the equipment and chairs. The gym must be vacated within 10 minutes of the end of the session, in order for the church to be secured.
  • Level of Play: Play at the session that is appropriate for your skill level. If you need any assistance determining your skill level, please ask one of the hosts.
  • Rating Descriptors: Skill level ratings can be broken down into a range between 1.0-5.0. An advanced player is highly skilled and has mastered third shots, dinks, and lobs, and understands body and court position. Find your rating here.
