On March 10th we have a clinic opening in Mill Park, and we couldn't be happier! Melissa, Nicholas and Angela look forward to seeing you there!

Also included in this newsletter: Infection control update and also a reminder about hydrotherapy, and how it can assist your treatment outcomes in conjunction with in clinic hand therapy.

AFL NUMBER 1 FOR HAND & WRIST INJURIES

Did you know that 1 in 5 sport related hand injuries are from AFL?

Research published in February this year found that of all the sports and exercises related hand injuries admitted to a major Victorian public hospital network in one year, AFL accounted for 20% followed by cyclists at 15%.

Why? Put simply, the 360-degree nature of the game (unlike rugby which is played mainly in straight lines up and down the pitch), can result in fingers, hands and wrists to be pulled, jarred, kicked and crushed. Ouch!

Reduce the risk of hand injury at footy by:

Training players from junior grassroots level the correct way to tackle, handball and mark.

For example, when tackling, players need to avoid catching their fingers in another player’s clothing as it could lead to dislocation; players can avoid hand balling with the thumb in the palm; and they can hold their fingers to the sky and their body behind their hands when marking where possible.

HAND HOLDING

There's a lot of hand holding here at Melbourne Hand Rehab!

We take infection control very seriously and we have a long standing and rigorous infection control procedure. This includes all team members completing their annual hand hygiene certificate. Recently, we've updated our daily routine following a training session regarding the 2019 novel coronavirus to ensure we all remain safe and reduce any risk of cross infection. You'll find hand sanitiser at the desk and masks available if you've got a cough, etc.

HYDROTHERAPY: How it can assist treatment outcomes

Hydrotherapy has proven effectiveness for relieving pain and swelling. It is very helpful for people with pain and swelling in the wrist or hand as well for those with neck and shoulder pain. Our hydrotherapy physiotherapists will tailor a specific hydrotherapy program to you, based on your specific rehabilitation goals.

Hydrotherapy pools are heated to 34 degrees. Exercise at this temperature allows for:

  • Greater range of movement
  • Pain relief
  • Swelling reduction
  • Relaxation
  • Stability building
  • Strengthening
