In Animal Triste, four dancers grapple with an inner war that flares in the background. Neither quite man nor woman, slaves to their desires and anxious to escape them, prisoners of the tribal instinct, they are terrestrial beings, wild animals, angels and demons. Side by side, these domesticated primates rush towards something: their ruin, most likely.

Animal Triste features the internationally acclaimed and award winning choreography of Mélanie Demers and a national cast of dancers from Vancouver, Ontario, and Quebec, including: Marc Boivin, James Gnam, Brianna Lombardo, and Léa Noblet Di Ziranaldi.

Artist Talk to follow February 14th performance.

WCD received a Community Grant from The Winnipeg Foundation to support artist fees to ten dancers and two commissioned choreographers for WCD’s first show of the season, ACTUALIZE, marking WCD’s 55th season and the beginning of WCD's new chapter led by its newly appointed Artistic Director, Jolene Bailie.

The purpose of this grant was to create a project that was meaningful and inclusive to the Winnipeg contemporary dance community, including: providing an opportunity for new entryways into working with WCD; opportunities for new creation; increased opportunities for dancers through engaging a larger cast; and opportunities for training by providing professional development opportunities for both the artists engaged and the professional community at large through open classes. This project supported and engaged dance artists at various stages of their career, including emerging, mid-career, and senior artists. The entire project included ten dancers, three choreographers, five teachers, and an offering of 18 professional level classes.

WCD was thrilled to bring together an incredible ensemble. The impact from this grant was significant, and our three show run was met with enthusiastic response, opening to a full house.

“I am so grateful to have had the terrifying and exhilarating opportunity to dance in someone else's work at this stage in my life. Zorya's artistry and humanity are gifts worth sharing and I was honoured to help bring her ideas to light for the Winnipeg dance audience.”
- D-Anne Kuby

D-Anne Kuby started her professional dance career as an apprentice to Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers in 1978 and danced with the company until 1991. D-Anne returned to dance with WCD with support from The Winnipeg Foundation.
