I hope that everyone is off to a great start this year! We just held a successful SpelHouse Professional Development Symposium at Spelman College where more than 100 HBCU alumni came to hone the development of their careers. Our joint effort with the Morehouse College National Alumni Association (MCNAA) is an opportunity to receive training in four areas: personal branding, young alumni career strategy, transitioning executive planning and entrepreneurship.
The Symposium provides specialized, intergenerational information in order for alumni to expand their knowledge of current skills necessary to obtain mid to executive level careers in today’s market. Ultimately, when alumni obtain better jobs, they obtain access to wealth. Be on the lookout for the Symposium in Dallas and New York City this year!
February is, “American Heart Month,” as designated by the American Heart Association (AHA). Go Red for Women® is the AHA's global initiative to end heart disease and stroke in women. As NAASC members do so much for the community, February is when NAASC embraces the idea of doing something for ourselves. Help us celebrate “NAASC Goes Red Day,” by wearing red along with your AHA pin on the first Friday in February (Friday, February 7, 2020). In addition, please post pictures and tell stories on social media of something you are doing to improve your heart health throughout the month of February!
February is also a time to pay attention to NAASC Constitution and National Bylaws amendment deadlines as well as elections information. Let’s increase the number of NAASC election participation by being sisterly and reaching out to our elections chair, Kimberly Forde to ensure all our “seasoned” NAASC members that may not use email get ballots.
Finally, I want to apologize to the NAASC membership. Last month, we gave kudos to Dr. Jane Smith and Sharon Owens, two great supporters of NAASC. Unfortunately, a photo of Sharon receiving a token of NAASC’s appreciation was inadvertently left off of our newsletter! I am including that picture now so that members get a chance to see how we honored our dear sister. We are fortunate that Sharon will remain at Spelman for a time, so please be sure to reach out via email!
In Sisterhood and Wellness!

Giving is what the NAASC- Tampa Bay chapter does best!
On December 7th, the members met for the annual Christmas party with a purpose that included a wonderful toy drive. The toys for children of all ages were donated to Metropolitan Ministries, a local, grassroots community nonprofit that serves poor and homeless families and individuals throughout the Tampa Bay area. This holiday community service activity allows the chapter to support a community agency and make a difference in the life of a child in need. For more information about the chapter, upcoming events, and ways to get involved, please email: naasctampa@gmail.com or follow the chapter on Facebook @naasctampa and/or Instagram @naasctampa

January was National Creativity Month and, to start this new decade, the Atlanta Chapter showed appreciation for creative expression in various forms. The Chapter joined with Alumnae Chapters and Spelmanites across the country in supporting the nationwide release of the powerful, thought provoking film, Just Mercy. On January 11 th at AMC Parkway Pointe, 47 attendees enjoyed the sisterhood at a private screening of the movie starring fellow Alumna, Karan Kendrick C’98, as Minnie McMillian.
Activities continued on January 17 th at the Atlanta History Center with a screening and panel discussion of the film, Ali’s Comeback, which chronicles the years after Ali was stripped of his title and his epic return to boxing.
Finally, the Chapter tapped into our own artistic side at Paint Sip Socialize on January 26 th hosted by our Young Alumnae.
We invite Alumnae in the Atlanta area to join us! The next General Body Meeting is on February 1 st at 2pm on the campus of Spelman College, Cosby LL32. Also, mark your calendars for the Chapter’s annual Spelman Blue on the Green Golf and Tennis Scholarship Fundraiser on April 20 th. NAASC Philadelphia chapter held the January chapter meeting Saturday, January 11 at Penn Wynne library where we welcomed new members and agreed this period’s donation to Spelman.
As part of our celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King the chapter worked with local public radio station WHYY and with nonprofits NewCORE and For(bes) the Culture on a panel discussion based on “Moving On From This Mountain” a speech given by MLK at the 1960 Founders Day convocation at Spelman. The panel was moderated by Kimya Johnson Esq, C’96, and included Gwen Eagleson C’62 and Ebonne Ruffin C’2005 and held Friday, January 17 at WHYY studios in Philadelphia.
WHYY sponsored stipends for essays written by Imani Hester C’2014 and Alexis Roberson C’2019. The essays were published on whyy.org (https://whyy.org/articles/tackling-todays-violence-requires-dr-kings-philosophy-of-love/) and were well received.
We also partnered with local Morehouse alumni on two service events on Saturday, January 18. The primary event was a Career Show and Tell for children in which alumni shared info about their careers. Alumni also shared info for young adults/new voters on how to prepare to vote – including registration and how to choose candidates & issues.
The February chapter meeting will be Saturday, February 8th from 10 am -noon at the Penn Wynne Library just off City/Township Line Rd. Julie Rainbow, C’82 will reprise a multimedia presentation on her book, ‘Black Love.’
