We want to provide you with an update on the novel coronavirus that has emerged from the city of Wuhan, in China. Here are some important details to note:
- The World Health Organization (WHO) has not declared this as a global health emergency, but is continuing to monitor the situation very closely.
- The Ontario Ministry of Health has added novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) as a Disease of Public Health Significance, making it mandatory to report suspected and confirmed cases.
- As of January 27, the Ministry of Health has confirmed a second case of coronavirus in Toronto.
At this time, the Ministry of Health still considers the risk to Ontarians to be low. However, to help increase the safety of our clients, employees and volunteers in the community, we are asking that you take the following precautions:
Hospice and Friendly Visiting Volunteers: Please call clients prior to your scheduled visit to ensure no one in the home is experiencing flu-like symptoms. If the answer is yes, suggest rescheduling the visit.
Kosher Meals on Wheels Volunteers: Given that the risk of exposure is low, deliveries will continue as usual. However, gloves, masks and hand sanitizer are available for anyone who feels more comfortable with additional protection.
Adult Day Program: Our staff are monitoring clients and will take appropriate action if needed. Volunteers are encouraged to continue attending the program and supporting our clients.
Together with our Joint Health and Safety Committee, we continue to review our policies and procedures to ensure everyone in our organization remains safe. We are also monitoring official sources, including the Ministry of Health, WHO, and local public health agencies for any updates and recommended precautionary measures.
Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our clients.
