ART IN ACTION
Each year, Avoca West hosts an Art in Action as a way to help students develop creativity, critical thinking, self-expression, and cultural awareness through various art curriculum. Students are encouraged to bring small personal memorable item(s) to incorporate into projects during Art-in-Action projects. We are still seeking volunteers for the event, so please consider lending a hand and some of your time during Art-in-Action on February 6, here. PTC EXECUTIVE BOARD VACANCIES FOR 2020!
Are you looking for a way to better serve the school district? The PTC’s Executive Board has numerous vacancies in the upcoming school year, so consider one of these open positions. All roles require a 2-year commitment. Please contact avocaptc@gmail.com to nominate yourself or someone else you know. Elections will be held in May 2020. Vacancies: President, AW & MM Vice Presidents, Treasurer & Director of Volunteers.
FUN FAIR 2020
The community's beloved Fun Fair and Silent Auction events are right around the corner, so be sure to mark your calendars for February 23, 2020, from 12-3 pm. Enjoy unlimited games, entertainment, and bouncy fun! Food is an important fuel to keep you and your kids moving throughout the event, which is why there are FREE popcorn and cotton candy with entry. Fresh food will be available for purchase from Irving's for Red Hot Lovers, including: hotdogs, veggie dogs, Italian beef, chips, soda, and water. "I'd truly like to thank you for the extra funding for my classroom. I was able to purchase prizes for my "Peseta" store, which I set up twice a year. Throughout the year, my students earn "pesetas" and then they can buy different cultural items, like Guatemalan hacky-sacks, or candies from Colombia or their favorite, traditional Mexican cookies that I purchased from a Panadería near my house in the city."

FEBRUARY COLOR CREWS CELEBRATION
On February 5th (World Read Aloud Day), Avoca West will welcome author/inspirational speaker Jason Tharp! Students will gather in the South gym from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Submit a Book Order Form to purchase a signed copies of his work.
Students are encouraged to wear their color crew capes, and to show their uniqueness, they are welcome to wear a fun/favorite/crazy hat from home. Questions? Contact Ms. Geidner (geidners@avoca37.org).

The District Choral Concert
Thursday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Marie Murphy gym.
The concert, "Grant Us Peace, Give Us Courage", features the Avoca West Concert Choir, Marie Murphy Concert Choir and New Trier Varsity Voices--over 80 students in grades 3-12. Join us for this annual tradition of voices raised in song! The concert will be streamed live at avoca37.org.

The Viking Fund provides families facing hardship with financial support to cover all or part of Avoca's athletic, Science Olympiad, band and school play fees. With the help of the community, our students will be able to continue to participate in these activities. To apply for extracurricular fee assistance, download this form and submit it to the Avoca Business Office to the attention of Beth Dever. Love, Money, and Parenting: How Economics Explains the Way We Raise Our Kids

Co-authors Matthias Doepke, Ph.D. and Fabrizio Zilibotti, Ph.D. look at how economic incentives and constraints - such as money, knowledge, and time - influence parenting practices and what is considered good parenting in different countries.

In the last few decades, American parenting has transformed from being relaxed and laissez-faire into a frantic, overscheduled activity. In this talk, economist Matthias Doepke, Ph.D. argues that this change, rather than being a form of collective madness, represents a broadly rational response of parents to a changed economic environment. The main culprit is rising economic inequality.
