HOMELESSNESS IN THE UNITED STATES ROSE BY 3% IN 2019

The Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) annual report reveals that homelessness across the nation saw a 3% uptick between January 2018 and January 2019. This increase – most notably in unsheltered and chronic homelessness – is reflected in California’s 16.4% increase and Oregon’s 9.7% increase, which offset a decrease across many other states.

2019 marked the third consecutive year of increased homelessness in the United States, following six years of declining rates.

Pictured above: Oregon had the second highest rate of unsheltered homelessness in the nation last year (AHAR Report 2019).

PORTLAND VOLUNTEERS HONOR MLK'S LEGACY BY MAKING A DIFFERENCE

A BIG thank you to the many volunteers who honored Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision by giving back on January 20th!

We had several meal provider groups and individuals volunteering in our shelters that day. Sarah & Friends (pictured above) provided a yummy "breakfast for dinner" at the Laurelwood Center. The Tillamook County Creamery Association (pictured below) made 150 sack lunches for the 5th Avenue and Safety Off the Street (SOS) shelters.

Nearly 200 volunteers from Kaiser Permanente also spent MLK Day volunteering at Argyle Gardens (pictured below), the Transition Projects deeply affordable housing project now taking shape in the Kenton neighborhood of North Portland. They painted walls, built Move-In Kits for residents, constructed planter boxes, and helped with other finishing touches. Thank you for spending this national day of service with us!
