Supporter Newsletter: January 2020

We've had a fantastic start to 2020 and yet again have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our community. We started by collecting over 2,200 Christmas trees and we are very grateful for the £36,000 that was donated to support Hospice. Just last week, we were delighted to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Terri Atkinson's "Stars in your Eyes" and really appreciated the support and generosity shown by everyone who attended.

You can read more about these events and others below as well as find out ways to get involved to support Hospice this year. We have lots of opportunities from the Hospice Half Marathon in March to Dragon Boats in September. We're also delighted to name and thank local businesses who have nominated us as their Charity of the Year.

Thank you again for all your support: whether you're a volunteer, a donor, you've bought something from the Hospice Shop, or are holding an event to support us - we can't do what we do without you: helping everyone to live life to the full!
Meet Julie Jubb: Hospice Shop Manager working in Beau Pre, St Ouen

It always amazes me that everyone I speak to can tell me a story about how Jersey Hospice Care made a difference to them or to someone they know. Dying can be a scary thing and Hospice provides a safe place for patients, and their loved ones, where each person is cared for as an individual and receives the physical, emotional, or spiritual care they need.

I’ve been working in the Hospice fundraising shops for over 10 years now and I love my job! I’m usually based at Beau Pre in St Ouen and I support our team of staff and volunteers who are the heart and soul of our shops. We all agree that it is an incredible privilege to meet the members of our island community who are so generous – whether they’re dropping in to donate something or popping in for a browse. We hear so many stories about what Hospice means to them, often talking to those who have lost loved ones and been grateful for the care Hospice has given them and their wider family.

For me, working for Hospice is one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. I know that the work we do is having a direct impact on the support that Hospice can provide for those who need our care. Every item donated means another item to sell; and every item sold means funds raised to pay for our specialist care. Last year, it cost £6.8m to run Hospice and provide all of our services, that’s £18,600 a day. Your support – whether through a donation or a purchase from our shops, or attending an event, buying a lottery ticket or making a donation – means that everyone we care for can live life to the full. Thank you – we couldn’t do what we do without you.

Recording breaking Christmas tree collections
This has been a record breaking year for the annual Jersey Hospice Care Christmas tree collection scheme! We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of Islanders who donated over £36,000 this year as an army of Hospice volunteers collected over 2,200 trees. This year, 49 volunteers drove across the Island to collect trees from local businesses and residential addresses. We are so grateful to everyone who took part in this scheme and made a donation to Hospice - it has been a fantastic start to the year and ensures that we can continue to offer all of our services - at Hospice and in the community - free of charge, to everyone who needs them.

As always, there are so many people to thank but we wanted to draw special attention to our sponsor, Mitchell Building Contractors and supporters Webreality and Jersey Post as well as our fantastic volunteers. Thank you! Click here to read the full article.
Thank you to local businesses who have named Hospice as their Charity of the Year
Every year we are delighted to hear from local businesses and organisations who have nominated us as their Charity of the Year. We are so grateful to them and their employees who will fundraise on our behalf through a wide range of events and initiatives including cake sales, dress down days, sporting events, and quiz nights. These organisations are valued Hospice partners and we are delighted to work with them and support them throughout the year. We are very proud to have been nominated by:
A moment to remember...
Our vision at Hospice is to enable patients to live life to the full and we do this in so many different ways so that every moment counts. In January, we were able to surprise our patients with a special visit from some Shetland ponies (Jethro and Sweep). Patients visiting the King Centre had the chance to spend time with the ponies including a lady who had been a horse groomer her whole life and had not been able to spend time with her beloved horses recently. We are very grateful to Lara Manning at Finni's Ark for making someone's day.
Supporting Hospice and embracing contactless giving
At Hospice we recognise that not everybody carries cash these days and yet they still want to support us. As you may have seen, we now have "Tap to Give" devices in our Hospice shops and also in town and around the Island. Have you seen us at Coffee Republic or KFC? What about the British Airways passenger lounge or in Coop Grand Marche? They're secure and easy to use and make a huge difference - in just four months we've received over £3,500 in contactless donations! We're about to put the "Tap to Give" device back in our shop window on Union Street - do consider making a donation next time you walk by!

If you have a local business and would like to support us this way do get in touch; or if you're holding a fundraising event and would like a "Tap to Give" device as well as a collection bucket, please just ask Marina or Karon in the Income Generation Team.
