MAKATON MONTHLY
February 2020
Hello! Welcome to the February issue of Makaton Monthly.
NEWS
On Wednesday 22nd January, The Makaton Charity helped The One Show surprise a young Makaton supporter.

Isabella is 14 and has a younger brother, Lucus, who uses Makaton. In the last two years Isabella has used social media platforms to help raise awareness of Makaton by sharing videos of her signing along to popular songs. (Read more about Isabella's Makaton journey)

Zanna Finnerty, Director of The Makaton Language Programme, attended a filming session at Redriff Primary School along with Dave Benson Phillips, patron of The Makaton Charity, to help film the surprise for Isabella.

"Whilst watching the iconic Dave Benson Phillips clip of Goldilocks, he walked in and sat next to Isabella. It took a while for her to realise what was going on but she was thrilled to hear that she was getting an opportunity to talk about how Makaton changed her family’s life on The One Show.

"She did not have a clue what we were up to, and she was in total awe and overwhelmed when she met her idol, Louis Tomlinson.”

She is so pleased to have been given this award for her work and delighted that Makaton has been acknowledged in this way, which has given a huge boost to all Makaton users and their families, Makaton Tutors and all other professionals promoting it as well as The Makaton Charity.

YOUR STORIES
"I came across Makaton when my little brother Lucus was born with Down's syndrome.

"Then at age 11, after watching Wayne Barrow sign to songs, I decided that I wanted to be able to do the same for Lucus.

"My mum shared a video of me and it had over 30k views in a matter of days, and it made me realise that other people were interested too. That's when Isabella Signs was created across all social media platforms. Fast forward now 3 years, I have well over 120k followers across my socials."

“At Charlie Farley’s Nursery in Jersey, Makaton training has changed how we communicate with the children.

“It has given us, as practitioners, a whole new skill set to support and develop all our children to become effective communicators, whilst having great fun too. There’s nothing like your nursery teacher signing Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer to make a group of pre-schoolers laugh.”
