my Inner Inmate says it's impossible to know everything that's possible...as such, it's possible that nothing is impossible
Hello <<First Name>>
If it is available to you, raise your shoulders to your ears, and with awareness do a few shoulder rolls in both directions. Thank you
Hoping this email finds you well. And that you are finding some ease and comfort these days. I am keeping my blogging brief, honoring those that have commented on the length of my recent newsletters.
"we are not individuals fighting a faceless system – we are the system that needs to change" Rupert Britton
I am grateful to say that the 1st gathering of the South Florida mindfulness coalition took place in Miami on Sunday. My initial reason for forming a coalition of open-minded and like-hearted mindfulness advocates was to come together, network and share what we are doing with mindfulness in any way in our daily lives. And to be a resource for each other. But, my intention has changed. Broaden actually. Likely due to the interest and attendance at the "A Mindful So Fla" event I co-organized in Dec, our interconnectedness and relationship to each other and to our environment have been on my mind lately. I am realizing that each of us is part of a greater whole, deeply connected at the mind and heart. When this truth is genuinely acknowledged, we become more compassionate and caring for each other and our world. And we can act effectively to tackle the issues we face individually, collectively and environmentally together...
The first coalition meeting was a great start to the formation of a group of practitioners, teachers, advocates, and supporters of mindfulness. By placing the group rather than the individual at the center of our discussion, we explored ways to improve the wellbeing, sanity, & compassion of our community as a whole. We heard many wonderful ideas from those working with&in healthcare, education, mental/behavioral health, law enforcement, academics, prisons, social justice, non-profits, corporate, entrepreneurs, tech, the arts, and the natural world. There was great energy and enthusiasm for and from the attendees. Our next meetings will be in Palm Beach County (Feb 25) and then Broward.
For now, we will be collecting and coalescing ideas and suggestions to discuss and decide what this cooperative will look like and what its function(s) will be. All will be heard. We will then continue the exploration of how and where mindfulness can benefit our community, ourselves and our environment.
Thank you to those that came to the 1st meeting. And thank you for being a part of our So Fla Mindfulness community—it is because of you and folks like you that we do what we do.
You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment - Thoreau
Speaking of folks in our community, congrats to Piero Falci on his new book, A Better Life in a Better World: Can Mindfulness Save Us from Ourselves? a collection of short essays discussing mindfulness and mindful approaches to everyday life. The essays inspire, excite and invite readers to investigate their views, paradigms, and beliefs, giving free reins to their imagination that we make this a better world.
Piero’s book adds to the list of local mindfulness authors, including:
Patricia Isis - The Mindful Doodle Book -75 Creative Exercises to Help You Live In the Moment combining the benefits of mindfulness and the intuitive expression of doodling to help you relax, find focus, and creatively express emotions through spontaneous artmaking.
Scott Rogers - The Elements of Mindfulness: An invitation to explore the nature of waking up to the present moment...and staying awake - offering readers an introduction to mindfulness, drawing upon the elements of nature.
William Garcia Now O’ Clock Being mindful. It always is - the inspiring journey toward the enlightened mindfulness of being in the moment and staying there long enough to be awakened (see Willy’s video, SLOW DOWN HERE)
And to be published May 1, Janet Slom - An Artful Path to Mindfulness: MBSR-Based Activities for Using Creativity to Reduce Stress and Embrace the Present Moment (forwarded by Jon Kabat Zinn) This unique workbook invites you to draw, tear, mark, play, and take risks. There is no plan, no goal, and no preconceived idea to follow. The process is simply communicating to yourself who you are in this moment, following the thread one mark at a time.
Again my sincerest and deepest GRATITUDE to all of you - all of us, in our growing and evolving So Fla Mindfulness Community as we continue to extend and evolve mindfulness in so many ways, to so many people, to the benefit of society at large…and to our planet. Remember there is no planet B!
Hope to see you soon, welcoming feedback...
Much suffering is alleviated when the automatic habits of mind and heart are unlearned and uncoupled from memory (what was) and desires (what ought to be) and replaced by mindful, non-evaluative attention to what is - now.
Much freedom is gained when people realize the essential inter-connectedness of all phenomena and the constructed aspects of boundaries, objects, our self-identities and our stories about life and nature.
