The Friends of the Library support the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library through fundraising and advocacy. The Friends sell donated books and library discards through online sales (Amazon.com), the Chandler Booktique used books and gift shop, and quarterly book and media sales. Since 1971, the Friends have donated more than $1.8 million dollars to the library. The donated funds are used by the library to try new innovative ideas, including the Smart Lockers at Oakland Community Center and HyVee, and the Make-It-Lab workspace. For 2019 the Friends donated $90,000 to the library.
Friends members believe in the library’s mission and spread the word about its programs, services and resources. Members receive newsletters, a discount in the Chandler Booktique, and free admission to Friends events and book sales.
Chandler Booktique hours are Monday-Friday 10am – 6pm, Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sunday noon – 5pm. On the 15th and last day of each month, books and all donated items are half price in the Booktique. If the 15th or last day of the month falls on a Sunday, the half price sale is Saturday and Sunday.
