Long Island Population Health Summit
In partnership with the Long Island Association, the Long Island Health Collaborative is hosting a Population Health Summit on Friday, February 28th, 2020.
 
This is not the value-based purchasing presentation that we've all been to before.

Don't miss our unique panel which will feature the key participants of a healthcare housing pilot project happening now on Long Island.

The panel will include the involved CBO, primary care provider, and health plan. Panelists will tell their VBP story, including successes, obstacles, and tips for others in a candid discussion.

Plus: Academic partners who support our workforce pipeline and master-level students will be present to discuss possible opportunities for assistance with your organization's special projects.

Cancer Peer Education Program
Free Breast and Prostate Cancer Education
Free Presentation on Breast and Prostate Cancer Education in English or Spanish!

The Cancer Peer Educators at Peconic Bay Medical Center provide free education to men and women, ages 50-74.

Educators can help individuals:
  • Find a primary care physician
  • Find a mammography facility
  • Obtain health insurance
  • For those who are uninsured, access to free cancer screenings
  • Access to community resources such as food pantries, housing, and/or clothing
  • Obtain interpreter services

United Way of Long Island
Project Warmth
Project Warmth is a safety net for financially struggling individuals and families who are unable to pay their heating bill. This program provides a one-time grant for fuel and/or fuel-related electricity. Payments are made directly to oil and utility companies on behalf of eligible residents facing heating emergencies. For the hundreds of families we help each year, assistance with an oil delivery or utility arrears means they have room in their budgets to cover essentials like food or medication.

If you or someone you know needs emergency heating assistance, call United Way’s 2-1-1 Long Island information and referral call center by dialing 2-1-1 (or 1-888-774-7633) 7 days a week, 9:00am-5:00pm, for referrals to an intake site.

Association for Mental Health and Wellness
Free Mental Health First Aid Trainings
#MHStrong, a program of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW), is offering free training in Mental Health First Aid. This 8-hour evidence-based course teaches participants how to assist someone who is experiencing mental health distress or developing a substance use problem. The program is funded by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to promote mental wellness.

Mental Health First Aid for Older Adults
Thursday, February 20 @ 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
For the first time, the World Health Organization (WHO) has officially classified workplace burnout as an occupational phenomenon in its latest revision of the International Classification of Diseases. “Burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed,” the WHO said Tuesday May 28, 2019. 

This workshop will focus on the causes and reactions to workplace burnout and stress, dealing with mental illness at work, and working with difficult people.The program will further incorporate how resilience helps in dealing with managing workplace burnout and will provide tips on how to prevent it. Participants will develop an action plan for dealing with burnout at their own workplace.

Suffolk Care Collaborative
Cultural Competency and Health Literacy TTT
Tuesday, February 25 @ 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
The communities we serve are growing in cultural and linguistic diversity. There is a need to inspire cultural change within organizations.

SCC will be holding Cultural Competency and Health Literacy (CCHL) Master Training, an interactive program in which participants will have hands-on learning experience to build better communities.

Post-training, Master Trainers will receive a certificate of completion and will be able to provide training sessions. Master Trainers will be able to facilitate two different trainings: (1) 2 hour CCHL training sessions for workforce professionals and (2) 7.5 hour master training sessions for future master-trainers.

Treating Nicotine Dependence
Tuesday, March 10 @ 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 a.m.
Suffolk County Department of Health Services "Learn to Be... Tobacco Free" Program, in cooperation with NYS OASAS and Suffolk Care Collaborative, will be hosting Treating Nicotine Dependence training.

Attendance at this one day training will enable
professionals to:
  • Describe the three aspects of nicotine dependence
  • Provide appropriate motivational counseling
  • Integrate behavior change theory into treatment plan
  • Assist clients/consumers in making a quit plan
  • Discuss the 7 FDA approved medications recommended for treatment of nicotine dependence
  • Integrate relapse prevention into treatment plan
  • Tailor cessation strategies to individual/agency needs
  • Discuss the marketing of tobacco products
  • Identify the health consequences of tobacco use

  • Social Media Specialist - Full Time, Part Time, or Freelance Considered - The Social Media Specialist at Project Safety Net NY is an exciting new position at a growing Long Island-based non-profit focused on public health and community outreach. This role will work closely with the Executive Director and other managers to build a vital, recognized and relatable brand. As a hands-on, brand ambassador you will be responsible for crafting and distributing community stories, finding innovative ways to promote our programs, and developing social media content that gets attention. 
  • Public Health Internship/Practicum - The practicum/internship offers students the opportunity to build and strengthen professional skills particularly in program evaluation, research, analysis, writing, organization and interpersonal communications. Specific responsibilities include policy development, and quantitative research, design, Epi Data research, and assistance with monitoring federal health programs and other emerging healthcare trends. Work with Supervisor to develop evaluation tools to assess outcomes as well as needs of clients served.  Candidate will experience exposure to PSNNY program analysis and evaluation methodologies.  Participate in the development of client surveys and creation of the reports.

Scholarship Opportunities
EmPOWERED to Serve Scholars 
Students working to improve health in their communities.

Summary:
EmPOWERED to Serve Scholars are college freshmen, sophomores and juniors making a difference in the health of their communities.  Past scholars include:

  • A health policy and management student who encouraged corner groceries to sell fresh, healthy foods,
  • A biochemistry student who taught diabetes courses at a community health clinic, and 
  • A public policy student who helped launch an urban garden where families living in a food desert could harvest fresh fruit and vegetables.
Ten students will each receive a $10,000 scholarship towards their college tuition.

Capstone Seminar: Population Health Issues

The Program in Public Health is looking to partner MPH candidates with organizations in the process of applying to grant opportunities.

A small team (3-5 students) will work together to complete your grant application before whatever deadline you have! The course starts on Thursday, January 30th and ends in mid-May. There will be two opportunities to speak to the class to explain your organization’s mission and the grant.
