What was your first WE Bike NYC ride?
Cranksgiving, November 2012! I'd ridden Cranksgiving in prior years with other friends before, but that year they were all out of town and I was hesitant to go by myself. I'd attended the party that WE Bike NYC had thrown in October 2012 to celebrate their first season, and was excited to go on a ride. I emailed the day before to see if there was room for me to come be on a team - I didn't know yet that WE always make room! I went to the meetup and rode with other women who wanted to go kinda fast (but still be safe) and we had a BLAST. We had fun doing the race, and then met up with the other WE Bikers, and all went to the awards and after-party together. The rest, as they say, is history!
What's your favorite route?
I live in south Brooklyn, and every weekend I can in the summer I love to ride to the beach. The route along the Shore Parkway Greenway with Jamaica Bay next to me, coming or going from the Rockaways is my sanctuary. That is by far my favorite bike path in the city.
What do you ride?
I have a Specialized Langster Steel that I ride fixed (with hand brakes) for commuting or around the city, and a Soma Double Cross (before they retired the cantilever brake model) that Liz Jose and Bike Works built out for me for #WEBiketoDC that I ride for longer distances, or for multi-day touring. Next up for me is probably an entry-level road bike... or a cute mixte 3 speed with a front basket... or a longtail/ cargo bike... it's so hard to choose!
Why do you love WE Bike NYC?
I love WE Bike NYC because we help other FTW folks discover the joys of biking and build community every day. Working with WE Bike NYC has taught me so much, made me some lifelong friends, and helps us create space for ourselves on the streets. I find it incredibly rewarding, and am so grateful for the opportunity to do this work.
