New Cell Phone Policy
Study after study points to the cognitive drain that occurs due to the mere presence of smartphones and hand-held devices among students. Spend a few minutes researching this and you will find lots of supporting data. You will also find some data on how smartphones can be used as tools; however, this does not outweigh the distracting negative effect of having access to phones during education time.

We at Seven Summits would like our students to ‘stay present’ and practise face-to-face contact with their peers, as well as maximise their learning time in the centre. Our planned policy is that students will not be allowed to carry or use cell phones or other hand-held devices from 9am to 11:35am and 12:35pm to 3pm. Students who carry their device to the centre will place it in the provided wall pocket in the secure administration area during the indicated times.

Cell phones will be confiscated if they are not checked in.

  • First Offense – Student can pick up their phone from the Administrator at the end of the day.
  • Second Offense – Device must be picked up by a parent/guardian.

Refusal to IMMEDIATELY give-up the device to a staff member will result in parents being asked to pick up the student and keep them at home until they agree to adhere to this policy.

Therefore, we will be looking for your feedback by mid-February and adjusting/implementing the policy shortly thereafter. Please click here if you have any questions or concerns.

In keeping with the idea of staying ‘present’ and interacting with those in front of us, we encourage students to stay ‘laptop free’ during the lunch hour. We have LOTS of games and puzzles to occupy a student’s time. We will also encourage ‘just visiting’ with friends. One staff will have lunch in their classroom to accommodate the needs of the students that need to do work during the lunch hour.

Parents are encouraged to communicate with their child during lunch hour, or to contact centre staff during class hours.

Forms for signing will be sent via email to parents. The staff and board has had extensive discussions on this subject and feel this is in the best interest of the student’s learning and growth. Thank you for your attention to this important new policy.

Volunteers for  the Annual Fundraiser Night - Fiesta 2020!
A Night Out in Rossland renamed Fiesta 2020 is back for another great evening on Friday, February 28th at the Miner’s Hall. Music will be provided by Shredded Cheese - a fan hit and a great band to get you up dancing! Mexican inspired appetizers by Cahoots Kitchen and there will be a cash bar of beer, wine and tequila. In addition the popular silent auction will be back. We need volunteers to round up silent auction items and also to help with setting up, during and after the event. Click here if you can help. Make sure to save the date!

Help Manning the Centre Booth
We are looking for someone to help man our booth at the volunteer event at the Miner’s Hall Tuesday February 4th from 5:30-7:30pm. Vivienne will be there for the two hours as will a board member but we would like to have a parent too. Click here if you can volunteer. See below in Community news to learn more details about the event.

Take some larger items to the dump
We are in need of a truck and driver to take down a worn out whiteboard and broken chairs. We will pay the dumping fee and give you your time plus 1 hour to cover the cost of gas as part of your parent volunteer hours. Click here if you can help.

Kitchen Painter Needed
The kitchen gets well used and the cupboards are needing to be painted. It can be done in chunks - with the most needed areas done first. It would be an ideal project for volunteers to do over Christmas, Fridays, weekends and March Break. Click here if you are interested in helping.

News at the Centre

Thanks to MIDAS Lab and Fenix Advanced Materials
MIDAS Lab, with the support of Fenix Advanced Materials, is donating lab time for our students. The Grade 9s will be taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity and will be heading to the MIDAS Lab January 30th and February 6th. MIDAS is a FabLab, which is part of a global network of local labs that are democratizing access to digital fabrication, allowing anyone to make almost anything. FabLabs are asking – and answering – how we will live, learn, work and play in a world where data can become things and things can become data. MIDAS has $430,000 of the best “FAB”rication equipment for public, academic & commercial use. The building is a newly renovated accessible space with state of the art, enterprise-level equipment and training on that equipment including: 3D Printers, 3D scanners, CNC milling equipment, woodworking, an electronics lab, teaching and co-working space and more. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to use this equipment. Thanks to MIDAS and Fenix Advanced Materials!

Student Athlete Jasmine Drolet rocks the Youth Olympics
Four Canadian cross-country skiers strode into Lausanne, Switzerland for the 2020 Youth Olympic Games, January 9-22 and one of them was our own Jasmine Drolet, a grade 12 student here at the Centre. Nordiq Canada officially nominated two women and two men to represent Canada at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games, which brings together more than 1,880 athletes ages 15 to 18, from 70 nations, who will compete in more than 80 events. “These athletes have proven they can win against the best in their age group across the country,” said Joel Jaques, high-performance manager, Nordiq Canada. “They are continuously pushed at domestic events by a growing talent pool of cross-country skiers, which has prepared them well to achieve excellence in Switzerland.” Jasmine Drolet, 17, is a Canada Winter Games champion who also placed second in the 2019 Rising Stars race at the World Cup in Quebec City. Jasmine competed in a skate-ski sprint race (January 18), another skate sprint race that features several technical elements including jumps and turns (January 19), a 5 kilometre classic-ski event (January 21), and a mixed team relay (January 22). Jasmine got a 22nd in the sprint and 17th in the 5km classic event. Way to go, Jasmine!

Alpine Racers and Freeskiers have an epic Weekend at Red
Both the Alpine Racers and the Freeskiers had a fun filled competition weekend at Red Resort. The Alpine Racers participated in a zone race on the T-Bar slope. Lua, an international student from Spain finished third on Saturday and first on Sunday. Lena and Inés also participated and Freesia foreran the course. In the Freeski world, the athletes were charging down Link’s Line under the Motherlode chair. Visibility was poor the first day but then the weather cleared enough for the competition to run. Jojo placed third, Blaise placed third, Wyatt placed fifth, Meadow placed 7th and James had a great crash!  Well done to all the students!

Winter Carnival
A hardy troupe of students and staff braved the rain and participated in the parade. We were small but mighty and had lots of fun handing out our special 7S treats to the crowd. We also took home two prizes from the parade draw - lucky Vivienne got a 2 hour private at Red and Wyatt got a $60 gift certificate for Gabriella’s restaurant. Wyatt also participated in the Rail Jam where he took 2nd and had fun catching air along with a number of other students from the Centre. There were also two teams with students from the Centre racing in the John Heintz Memorial Relay Race. Cooper’s team won the race and Cedar’s team had a technical DQ when they lost the baton (which is a men’s tie).  And we had a stand selling soups and baked goodies outside the Alpine Grind which was manned by students and parents for which we raised funds for the students’ learning activities. Thanks so much for all those who volunteered over the weekend. Despite the weather it was a great weekend.
