WHAT'S THE WORD ON THE STREET?

98TH AVENUE AND SLOW OAKLAND

Oakland’s most recent pedestrian death occurred January 17 on 98th Avenue as Miesha Singleton, 40, crossed the busy street to pick up her daughter at Elmhurst United Middle School.  Police are still looking for the driver in the hit-and-run.
Crossing guards at the 98th Avenue intersection where Miesha Singleton was killed.
Although in recent years 98th between Bancroft and International has been slimmed to one lane each way for autos, speed-wise many drivers still seem to regard it as a four-lane thoroughfare.  WOBO’s Slow Oakland campaign is intended to increase safety in such locations by urging drivers to reduce speed in accordance with posted limits.

As of this newsletter OakDOT is planning on making changes at the Elmhurst crossing similar to those implemented at Garfield Elementary School on Foothill last year. However there are still many crossings and streets throughout the city where pedestrians and cyclists are at risk from speeding vehicles.  WOBO urges to its followers to a) observe the posted speed limit while operating a motor vehicle and b) support the Slow Oakland campaign by pledging not to speed.  Please help by adding your name to the list of pledges!

WOMEN BIKE HAPPY HOUR GOES TO THE LIBRARY

Please join WOBO and Bike East Bay at the Oakland Public Library's main branch for this month's Women Bike Happy Hour!  This event features a talk by Tessa Hulls on Women, Trans and Femme Riders in Early Cycling History.

The lecture looks at America's 1890's bicycling craze through the lens of gender and race and highlights the exploits of some incredible women while also providing the darker—and necessary—context that explains why contemporary cycling culture is dominated by men. The talk is part of the Shifting Culture series which features talks about the past, present, and future of leadership in biking and will be followed by a Q&A. All genders welcome.

Please register here to make sure we save a seat for you. We look forward to seeing you there!

DON'T FORGET TO VOTE ON MARCH 3!

California's 2020 Primary Election is on Tuesday, March 3,  Here at WOBO we're especially interested in Oakland's Measure Q, a Parcel Tax that will raise $21 million dollars annually for Parks Maintenance, Homeless Services and Water Quality improvements.
From the official ballot argument: "Measure Q will clean up our local parks, waterways and recreation areas while also addressing Oakland’s homelessness crisis. It will provide our most vulnerable populations with access to support services that help them find shelters and housing, and help to ensure that all Oakland parks, estuaries, and recreation centers are clean, safe, and equitably well-maintained."

Oakland's park system is a huge factor in the city's quality of life, especially for those who walk or cycle.  WOBO urges you to get informed on this measure and vote accordingly!

EAST OAKLAND FUTURES FESTIVAL MOVED TO APRIL
