The Needle is the OSU Extension electronic announcements to help keep you informed about local workshops, tours, and other happenings for woodland landowners/managers in Benton, Linn and Polk Counties. 
NRCS Local Working Group Meeting for Polk County
Help determine how local cost share funds will be prioritized and allocated.  Farm Bill funds now explicitly include forest lands, so it is important that family forest landowners show up, express their needs and be heard along with their agricultural neighbors.

Linn Small Woodlands Assoc. Seedling Sale and Local Woods Fair
Buy small numbers of native and ornamental plants for home and property projects, Seedlings pre-orders need to be submitted by January 18, 2020 (see link for details). The Local Woods Fair is a mixed craft and educational event, featuring artisans working with locally-produced woods, and groups providing information and services relevant to our local woodlands.

Time: 8:00 a.m. to noon 
Location: Linn County Fairgrounds Expo Center.  

Got Weeds? Vegetation Management Workshop for Forest Landowners
Day-long workshop, will focus on control of grass and weeds with herbicides. Cover the basics of the safe and effective use of herbicides for grass and weed control (we will not address brush control), including relevant rules, key herbicides, how they work, and correct applications methods.  There will be some pre-work reading assigned before the workshop. Instructors: Bruce Kelpsas and Brad Withrow-Robinson.

Basic Woodland Management Course
Five session course ideal for anyone just starting out taking care of a woodland property.  Topics covered: Getting Started, assessing your property and site. What’s Going on in Your Woods? Understanding tree biology and forest ecology, Taking Care of Your Woods, tree planting, care for an established forest, weed control. Getting it Done: safety, timber sale logistics, laws and regulations.
Offered in 2 locations as separate classes in 2020.  Register for one:
