Graduate Student Professional Development Digest
February 1-15, 2020

Dear Graduate Students,

Would you like to develop skills in public speaking, have a chance to communicate your research to a broad audience, and win up to $2000? Then be sure to sign up for this year's edition of Grad Slam! If you submit a three-minute video of your speech by February 17, you may be selected to participate in the campus-wide competition in April.

If you're nervous about recording your talk, then attend a GradPro recording session and we’ll take care of the filming! Visit this calendar page and sign up for an appointment slot!

After you do that, then read on for a whole host of other exciting opportunities for professional development!

– Linda von Hoene, Ph.D.
Assistant Dean for Professional Development

Workshops on Grading Rubrics & Teaching Statements

If you’re going on the academic job market, a statement of teaching philosophy will be a central part of your application portfolio. Get feedback on your draft statement from your peers on Friday, February 7, from 10:30 to noon. Click here to register. Or maybe you’d like to make your grading faster and fairer. If that sounds like you, then learn how to create and use a grading rubric on Wednesday, February 12, from 10-11:30 a.m. Register here. Both workshops are presented by the GSI Teaching and Resource Center.

Inclusivity Training & Certificate Program

Learn how to build community, listen deeply, and speak thoughtfully during a three-day program on inclusivity. This program will teach you how to respond effectively and meaningfully to harmful events, and equip you with strategies for avoiding and dealing with microaggressions. The program will occur on February 22, February 29, and March 7, and is presented by the Restorative Justice Center at UC Berkeley. Register here by February 7.

Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows Competition

Are you graduating from a Ph.D. program in the humanities or humanistic social sciences this semester, or did you graduate sometime after September 1, 2016? Are you interested in a career in the nonprofit or public sectors? If this sounds like you, then check out this year’s competition and jumpstart your career. Apply by March 18.

Love Data Week (Feb. 11-14)

If you're interested in information security, online publishing, or other topics related to data management, then check out the many events happening on-campus during Love Data Week. This nationwide event will give you an overview of the field of data science and hands-on opportunities to put what you've learned into practice. Presented by the Library, Research IT, Information Security Office, D-Lab, and the California Digital Library (CDL)
