MaterCare appoints Professor Bogdan Chazan as Medical Director

MaterCare International (Canada) is pleased to announce Bogdan Chazan, Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, has been appointed as Medical Director as of January 1, 2020.

Professor Bogdan is an obstetrician from Warsaw, former deputy head of the National Research Institute for Mother and Child, former national consultant in obstetrics and gynecology, member of the Government Population Commission in Poland. From 2004 to 2014 he served as Director of the Holy Family Hospital in Warsaw. Most recently he has been appointed to a team by the Minister of Health Konstanty Radziwiłł to develop new standards of perinatal care.

An openly Catholic obstetrician, Dr. Chazan previously signed a Declaration of Faith, along with approximately 3,000 other physicians and healthcare professionals in Poland, which calls for the recognition of a Roman Catholic doctor’s rights to perform their duties in line with their religious convictions.

As a director of the Holy Family Hospital he was within his rights when he denied a request to abort an unborn child diagnosed with head defects in 2014. However, this action led his dismissal.

His honors include the Golden Cross of Merit, awarded by the President of Poland  at the request of the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, "for exemplary, extremely conscientious performance of obligations arising from professional work", and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, also awarded by the President of Poland  "for outstanding merits in professional work for health protection, for achievements in scientific and didactic activity".

Among other numerous awards worth mention, he was also awarded the Curate Infirmos from the Pontificium Consilium pro Pastorali Veletudinis Cura in Holy See and the Christus Medicus from International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations.

Recently he has also been awarded the "Truth, Cross and Liberation” prize given by the Diaconate Society of the Light-Life Movement for "unwavering defense of the unborn life". During the award ceremony Professor Chazan said, “I accept this award on behalf of the younger generation of  gynecologists - obstetricians and midwives, who at the beginning of their careers really suffer because of authorities denying their right to a conscience clause.”

MaterCare International is honored that Professor Chazan has accepted this role.

Evangelium vitae, translated in English to "The Gospel of Life", is a papal encyclical promulgated on the 25th of March, 1995, by Pope John Paul II. MaterCare's mission is to carry out the work of Evangelium vitae by improving the lives and health of mothers and babies both born and unborn, through new initiatives of service, training, research, and advocacy designed to reduce the tragic levels of abortion world-wide and maternal and perinatal mortality, morbidity in developing countries. The 25th anniversary of Evangelium vitae in many ways is also OUR anniversary of the commitment to our mission.
