Supporting the bushfire recovery effort

Like many Australians, the Hughes team returned to the office in January horrified by our country’s bushfires including the devastating Cudlee Creek and Kangaroo Island fires closer to home.

Determined to help, Serena and Zoe from the Hughes office led a fundraising drive for the wildlife rescue effort on Kangaroo Island. Overnight, the pair raised more than $1600 through the Hughes team and their own networks to purchase and donate medical supplies for Minton Farm and Creating for Conservation. They’ve also both volunteered their time at Minton Farm.

Zoe has also been a regular volunteer at the Adelaide Koala Rescue emergency koala rescue centre, set up in the aftermath of the Cudlee Creek fires to help rehabilitate more than 60 injured koalas which will hopefully be released back to the wild this year.

Serena also spent a week sourcing food supplies for surviving native animals left without vegetation on Kangaroo Island. She has spent the past two weekends on Kangaroo Island alongside a small army of volunteers, distributing these food supplies around the island and volunteering at the KI Wildlife Park, caring for more than 200 injured koalas. Serena will continue to assist with koala care and food distribution over the coming months.

Well done Serena and Zoe on this incredible commitment to supporting the bushfire recovery effort this year.
