JUSTICE CORNER:  Where Our Community Presence Works
STRIVING FORWARD AS A BELOVED COMMUNITY

Once again, UUFB will be one of the sponsors for the Hopeful Horizons annual Race4Love. The race will be held at 9am on Saturday, February 15th, on Cat Island and all proceeds will go toward programs and services for survivors of child abuse, domestic abuse and  sexual assault in Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, Hampton and Allendale counties. In addition, funds raised help to maintain the local shelter.

In years past, several members of our congregation have participated in this annual event which has raised more than $60,000 dollars since its inception. Hopeful Horizons, by the way, was formed when Hope Haven(rape crisis center) and CODA(Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse) merged. If you want to join Rev. Lori and several members of SEJ at the race this year, you can register online.

For more information, contact Pamela Wentworth at Hopeful Horizons: wentworthp@hopefulhorizons.org

To Be Continued…
a column by Rev. Lori G. Hlaban

Dear Ones,

As we finish out the month of January, I want to again thank all the great volunteers who do good work throughout the year for UUFB. If I start naming names, I’m sure to inadvertently forget someone. In truth, everyone does something that contributes to this joyful sanctuary, if only by offering their presence in some way. Thank You!

February is African American History month, and we’re planning one service addressing this history centered around the children’s book Freedom Over Me, by award-winning African American author/illustrator Ashley Bryan.

Outside our walls, Beaufort has an impressive list of programs celebrating African American History month.

The Penn Center will present an evening with Dr. Gretchen Sorin at Frissell Hall TONIGHT, Jan. 30th, at 6:00 p.m. Dr. Sorin is the author of Driving While Black: African American Travel and the Road to Civil Rights. Penn is hosting a reception, presentation, and book signing. This program is FREE and open to the public.

USCB (University of South Carolina Beaufort) has a series of programs also, supported by South Carolina Humanities. Most programs are free and open to the public. You can learn more at this link.

I hope to see you at one of these enriching events!

    Blessings,
        Rev. Lori Hlaban

Important Stewardship news!

We are in a new year; welcome to 2020.  I hope it has started off well for all of you. The Stewardship pledge campaign has been very successful.  Pledges have been received from 46 members and 4 Friends of the fellowship.  The pledges total $130,040.  Many many thanks to everyone who pledged.  With your support, we were able to reach our goal!

Even though we have achieved our goal, you are welcome to submit your pledge if you haven’t done so.  Every dollar counts and helps our fellowship carry out its mission.

One final point to begin the new year: pledging is only the first step.  In order for the fellowship to thrive, pledges need to be paid.  If for some reason you cannot fulfill your commitment, please notify Rev Lori Hlaban or Usman Ismail.

If you have any questions regarding stewardship, please email stewardship@uubeaufort.org.

    Warmest regards,
        Grace M Drake
        Stewardship Committee Chair
