• The Center for Architecture (New York) has been getting press for its two current exhibitions, Single-Story Project and Public Works: Reflecting on 15 Years of Project Excellence for New York City (pictured above). The Fringe Cities exhibition, which closed January 18, was the subject of "The Mid-Century Misfire That Was ‘Slum Clearance’ Tore Down Much More Than Tenements" in New York Magazine.
• Congratulations to all the 2020 National Endowment for the Arts grant recipients, especially AAO members Architectural League, Center for Architecture + Design (Philadelphia), Chicago Architecture Center, Denver Architecture Foundation, Design Trust for Public Space, National Building Museum, Open House New York, Westcott House, and Seattle Architecture Foundation. Note that the next funding deadline for applications to the Grants for Arts Projects category is February 13. 
• The School of Architecture at Taliesin will close after 88 years of operation. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation will continue to offer educational programming at Taliesin and Taliesin West.
• Seven landscape architecture organizations, including the American Society of Landscape Architects, met for two days to discuss the state of the field. The groups have been meeting yearly since 2002.
• AAO welcomes new organizational member Materials & Applications out of Los Angeles.

Cities Built for Kids / Kids Building the Cities of the Future

• Next week, Kids' City will open at the Danish Architecture Center with the premise that "a city for kids is a city for everyone!" This interactive exhibition highlights architecture made for play and designs scaled for children. Pictured above: preparations for the upcoming exhibition. 
  • On a related note, a recent Guardian piece looks at how architects design Interactive learning experiences for kids at museums.
• WGN news profiled the Chicago Architecture Center's Girls Build Day which aims to get girls interested in architecture and related STEM fields.
  • With the current pace of development, there will soon be a pressing need to fill positions in the real estate, design and construction industries. In response, major players in Chicago's development community have formed the nonprofit Hire360 with the goal of recruiting and training more African Americans, Latinos and women to the building trades.

• Le Corbusier Paper Models: 10 Kirigami Buildings to Cut and Fold includes step-by-step instructions to make paper models of Le Corbusier's most notable buildings. Kirigami is a variation of origami that includes paper cutting and folding. By the way, there's also a book of Frank Lloyd Wright kirigami models by the same author. 
• The new children's book Dream Builder: The Story of Architect Philip Freelon celebrates the life and work of Phil Freelon. It includes an afterward written by Freelon before his death in 2019.

Behind the Scenes: Exhibitions, Websites, Programming Strategy

• CityPrint is a collaborative effort to develop a 3D-printed model of the city of Boston. Members of the maker community are translating sections of a digital model into fabrication-ready data, and as those sections are ready, they will be 3D-printed on site at BSA Space. The completed model will be a permanent exhibition in the lobby and the files will be made available to the public.
• The owners of the Douglas House are working to make the house available for study. They just launched a beautiful and informative website, and have plans to establish a foundation and hire a curator. The House was built in 1972 on Lake Michigan as a collaboration between Tod Williams and Richard Meier. Read more about the owners' efforts here.
• The LA Conservancy does an excellent job of organizing its programming around themes. The current initiative is The '70s Turn 50, so throughout 2020, programming, advocacy efforts, and partnership endeavors will address the legacy of the 1970s as it relates to preservation.
