The Ansarda DealMakers Gala Awards are just a few short weeks away. Take a look at those individuals shortlisted for the Ince DealMaker of the Year 2019
This is the 12th year in which such an award is to be made. Candidates are nominated by their peers in the M&A industry. From these nominations a shortlist of four candidates has been chosen by the Independent Selection Panel.
They are (in alphabetical order):
Shortlisted nominees for the
Ince DealMaker of the Year 2019
Jako van der Walt (Morgan Stanley) has been at the forefront of local deal-making for the past 25 years. During 2019 Jako originated and led transactions such as Impala Platinum’s incentivised conversion of its US$ convertible bonds, the unbundling of MultiChoice, South32’s sale of its South African Coal business to Seriti Resources and the listing of Naspers’ technology assets in Prosus – deals which have been shortlisted in the 2019 DealMakers category awards.
Jesse Watson (Webber Wentzel) has made the shortlist for the award for the second year in succession. During 2019 he was involved in the listing and unbundling of the shares in MultiChoice and Prosus, a deal shortlisted for the 2019 Brunswick Deal of the Year. Jesse was involved in the creation of the innovative Naspers M share structure to facilitate the implementation of the deal, giving shareholders the option to convert these shares to Prosus shares, or receive additional Naspers shares.
Johan Holtzhausen (PSG Capital) has over 20 years of corporate finance experience and has specifically identified, evaluated and negotiated numerous private equity and other transactions including BEE deals.  In 2019 Johan was the lead negotiator on behalf of Pioneer Foods in its acquisition by PepsiCo, a deal shortlisted for the 2019 Brunswick Deal of the Year. The deal was complex involving joint venture partners and regulators over multiple jurisdictions across the globe.
Kevin Trudgeon (Werksmans) was the lead attorney advising Clover Industries on the high profile acquisition by the Milco consortium of investors. The deal, valued at R4,8 billion  and a number of years in the making, was highly regulated  by the JSE and the Takeover Regulation Panel and involved significant competition issues. The deal has been shortlisted for the 2019 Brunswick Deal of the Year. Kevin also advised in a number of key private/public partnerships.
The winning DealMaker will be announced at the Ansarada DealMakers Gala Awards on Tuesday February 18, 2020

Criteria used for the selection of the shortlist for Individual DealMaker of the Year:
  • High profile deals/transactions: that the DealMaker was involved in particularly in the last year but also the last three.
  • DealMaker’s contribution to the deals: How important was the individual’s contribution to the conclusion of the deals?
  • Execution complexity: does the overall deal or transaction involve multiple steps/a number of smaller inter related deals? Are there numerous conditions precedent that need to be fulfilled? Does it involve many and/or complex regulatory approvals? Are there related debt / equity raising processes and how difficult are they to implement? Was there significant time pressure to conclude the deal/transaction? Did the deal/transaction exhibit innovative structuring?
  • Peer recognition:  is the DealMaker well regarded by fellow advisors, clients and the industry in general?
