THE DIFFERENCE VOLUNTEERS MAKE TO TAYSIDE COUNCIL ON ALCOHOL

Who do you help and in what way? Plusone Mentoring  provides an early intervention aimed at supporting and engaging vulnerable young people between the ages of 8 – 14 years who are deemed to be at risk of entering the children’s hearing system/criminal justice system. The project engages with young people and their families at a critical time to divert them away from negative pathways.

Link Up Mentoring provides support for young people aged 8-19 years old, who are marginalised by their communities as a result of their own behaviour, whether that is involvement in substance use or antisocial/ offending behaviour, or that of their family members.

We offer support to young people through the mentoring relationship and hope that this will provide a safe and trusting environment that will encourage the young person to consider their own potential and ability and encourage the growth of their confidence and self-esteem.

What difference do volunteers make to your organisation? All of the mentors for our mentoring programmes are volunteers so without them we would not be able to run these projects. Our volunteers meet their young person once a week for a year to empower them to make more positive choices whilst giving them a more positive outlook of their community. We are so grateful to the volunteers for their commitment to us and the young people.

What benefits can volunteers expect? The volunteers can expect to have the rewarding experience of empowering young people to become valued citizens of the community whilst being supported throughout the whole process by us. We will also offer free training courses throughout the year and chances to represent TCA at different events.

If no-one volunteered, where would you be? Without our volunteers these services would not go ahead.  The 2 mentoring projects rely solely on Volunteers to meet with the young people referred to the service therefore without them these young people would not be offered the service and this may impact on their future as an empowered and valued Dundee Citizen.

If you would like to volunteer with TCA as a Plusone Mentor or Link Up Mentor contact Georgia on 01382 456012 or email georgia.gall@alcoholtayside.com

Vol Orgs and Charities! If you’re involved in any way in care or healthcare, this is for you

The fifth Dundee SmartCare features:

* Healthcare apps … the kind you use on your smartphone for physical and mental health

* The Alliance’s Once for Scotland local and national directory, which is developing fast … they call it aliss

* National digital health app developers Waracle, who will do some futurology

* The trend towards smart homes … Geraldine from TEC in Housing will explain

* Alexa! Seescape will show us how Alexa can help people with disabilities live independently, and …

* Sensors to prevent people falling?

We’ll also round up recent developments in Dundee, where we’ve had success in using online outpatient appointments, home blood pressure monitors and new technology in dietetics.

The event is in the Bonar Hall on 25 March. For info on exhibitions, please contact Jimmy Black at jimmyblack@dvva.scot

University of Dundee students are looking to support a local charity

Every year, Dundee University Students Association partners with a different local charity, and fundraises for them through our RAG Dundee (Raising and Giving) campaign!

This campaign sees countless fundraising events being planned by our student-led committee throughout the academic year, and on average, raises over £10,000, each year.

With events like pub quizzes, escape rooms, drag shows and Lost: Hitchhike events being carried out, it's a great opportunity to link up Dundee's student body with an amazing local organisation.

For the second year running, nominations can be made by both students and charity representatives! If you'd like to nominate an organisation, simply fill out the following form. Any questions should be directed to Scott Quinn, the Vice President of Fundraising, at vpf@dusa.co.uk

Nominations are open till Friday 21st February at 12pm. Afterwards, nominations will be shortlisted by our RAG Committee, with the top five nominations being put forward to the Dundee student body for election. The winning charity will be announced on Friday 5th March and hold the position from July 1st 2020 - June 30th 2021.

GoodCall on a mission to reduce Dundee charities’ mobile phone bills

GoodCall are a new Dundee-based social enterprise with one mission - to provide charities and social enterprises with the lowest cost and highest quality mobile communications. Since they began trading in August 2019, they have signed up 17 non-profit customers and now manage over 200 lines. They offer connections to all major UK mobile networks and on average have managed to save customers over 30% on what they have been paying for their mobiles. For West of Scotland Housing Association, this meant a significant saving of over £10,500 across the duration of their contract.

With UK mobile overspend estimated at a startling £1 billion every year in unnecessary costs – they believe charities deserve better and will work as an advocate on their behalf. The community interest company will return profits which a normal supplier would make straight back to the charities they support in the form of lower line rental, better equipment and direct payment. They are also creating sustainable employment opportunities for individuals who have additional support needs.

GoodCall are currently offering a completely free mobile usage analysis and helpful advice to charities and social enterprises where they will calculate the best possible plan for you based on your current mobile usage. If this is something you would be interested in please contact Elaine Gray on 07535 396 882 or elaine@goodcall.org.uk
