BA Digest: A round-up of useful BA articles from the web

Dear <<First Name>>,

Happy New Year! And a very warm welcome to the latest edition of the Blackmetric BA Digest, a useful round-up of BA articles and news from around the web.  I hope that you had some time to relax over the festive/new-year period, and are now energised ready for 2020.  If you're looking for some interesting BA related articles/videos/conferences to energise you, look no further!
Start The Year With Free Professional Development: BA Video Interviews
I was able to convince some of the speakers from the Business Analysis Conference Europe to give short video interviews on a diverse range of topics. There are a whole range of short videos available on topics as diverse as:
  • The Future of Business Analysis (with Dr. Debra Paul)
  • What BAs can learn from the Undercover Boss (with Ryan Folster)
  • Delivering Business Analysis (with Christina Lovelock)
  • The Impact of Change (with David Beckham)
  • Visualisation for Shared Meaning (with Steve Whitla)
  • Getting the Rich Picture (with Kay Hardy)
  • Modern Ethics (with Dr. Liz Calder)
All of these can be found on the Blackmetric YouTube channel, so be sure to check it out.  We aim to post a new video every two weeks, so be sure to subscribe so you don't miss anything.  You can also access a whole range of previous webinars too, all for free, 24/7.

Upcoming BA Events and Conferences
There are a whole range of BA events and conferences coming up. Conferences are such great places to learn and meet with others, if you've not had a chance to attend one, I'd highly recommend making 2020 the year that you do. If you are aware of any other conferences, please drop me a line and I'll include them in the next edition of the newsletter:
Additionally, be sure to connect with your local IIBA chapter, as there are regular chapter events around the world too. For those of you in the UK, be sure to check out the IIBA UK chapter.
Upcoming Blackmetric Courses
We have upcoming public courses in London, Brussels and Hilversum (Netherlands).  Our next course is our two day Pre-project Problem Analysis course in London on 5-6 March--this runs only twice per year in the UK, so don't miss out!

We are also booking on-site courses for late Q2 - Q4 2020.  We specialise in hands-on, practical, training for BA teams, so please do get in touch if we can be of assistance. You'll find more information on our website.
Links, Articles and Resources
As usual, we have carefully curated a selection of links from around the web--these are included below--we hope that you enjoy reading/watching them! Please drop me a line if there is a topic that you'd like to see included in a future newsletter, or if you find an article that you'd like to share.  And if you do find this newsletter valuable, please feel free to forward it to your colleagues and connections. They can sign up here to receive the newsletter directly.

Your BA Digest List: A Round-Up Of Useful Business Analysis Resources

Links to useful resources from around the web:

1. "Five Ways To Distraction Proof Your Mind": A Short Video by Nir Eyal on the BBC Website: It's the start of the new year, and if you've had time off you might be finding it difficult to 'settle back in'.  Are you distracted by the ubiquitous ping of your smartphone, or notification on your e-mail? Perhaps this video will help!

2. BEWARE: Analysis Kills Empathy by Christina Lovelock on BATimes: Often as BAs we strive to be 'logical' and 'objective'.  But what about the human side?  Christina Lovelock discusses the importance of empathy.

3. Scaled Agile and the BA "Why Scaled Agile is like a Dead Whale" by David Beckham:  In this article, the fabulous David Beckham tackles the contentious topic of 'scaled agile' and shares a warning for us as BAs...

4. False Dichotomies and Political Narratives: It Matters To All of Us: Do you work in an organisation where there are 'political' power-plays? Perhaps stakeholders are serving up false dichotomies, and perhaps it's important for us as BAs to call this out.

5. Did You Know You're a Business Analyst by Helen Winter: In this short video, Helen Winter (author of the 2019 book, The Business Analysis Handbook) makes the important point that you don't have to have the BA title to be undertaking business analysis.

6. Seven Things Product People Need To Know About Agile by Kent McDonald on the KBP Media Blog: A fantastic article observing the differences between "doing agile" and "being agile", amongst many other insights.

7. How Business Analysis Serves Your Customers’ Experience by Libby Vincent: A thought provoking article that discusses product-centric and customer-centric views, and asks how business analysis aligns.  Well worth reading!

8. There Is No Spotify Model for Scaling Agile by Anthony Mersino at Vitality Chicago: Heard that the Spotify Model is a Scaling Methodology? This article argues that this definitely isn't the case!

9. The Great Personalisation Con by Gerry McGovern:  Personalisation sounds like a good idea, but do organisations really have the resources to execute it well?

10. My Zip Code Isn’t 90210: The Case For Understanding Stakeholder Variety: A trip overseas inspires a reflection on the importance of understanding the variety of stakeholders that we serve.

Kind regards & I hope to catch up with you soon,
