Dear Saints,

This Sunday we get to take part in an extra special celebration because Candlemas, which takes place every year on February 2, happens to fall on a Sunday this year. This feast day commemorates the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple when prophets Anna and Simeon welcomed Jesus and praised God for the "light of revelation" that had come into the world. Taking our cue from them, we have a celebration of light where the priests bless all the candles to be used in the year to come. As blogger of "The Painter Prayer Book," Jan Richardson writes, "Coinciding with the turn toward spring and lengthening of light in the Northern Hemisphere, Candlemas offers a liturgical celebration of the renewing of light and life that comes to us in the natural world at this time of year, as well as in the story of Jesus. As we emerge from the deep of winter, the feast reminds us of the perpetual presence of Christ our Light in every season.

In our service, we will bless the candles for our church and additional candles to send with you to take the blessing into your home. It's also a special day for our children, because in the Godly Play classroom, they will learn about the holiday and eat crepes (a Candlemas tradition in France). They are also invited to wear their pajamas to church for a fun morning of pajamas, pancakes and prayers.

Looking forward to celebrating the Light with you this Sunday and hopefully in a way that helps us see it more and more in our daily lives.

In Peace,

Andria+

Acolyte Party: Acolytes and families of acolytes, please join us for a party to celebrate the service of our acolytes and get to know one another better. We will meet at Dave and Buster’s in Happy Valley at noon on February 9th for food and fun! Lunch and a $15 power card will be provided. This is an event for the whole family so we hope parents and siblings will join us. Is your child interested in learning more about serving as an acolyte? This would be a great opportunity to connect and learn more. We need to provide a headcount to Dave and Buster’s so please RSVP to Kelley Elsea if you plan to join us!
Mardis Gras Pancake Supper: Join us for pancakes, ham, applesauce and beverages on Shrove Tuesday, February 25th at 5pm. Family: $15, Adults: $6, Children under 12: $3. Ash Wednesday: Wednesday, February 26 at Noon and 7:00 p.m. Begin your Lenten journey at one of these moving services that include the imposition of ashes and Eucharist. All are welcome to attend and everyone may receive Communion at God’s table. Our noon service is an intimate, spoken service in the Chapel. Our evening service has choral music and takes place in the main worship space.
Adult Forum Series - “Biblical Literature: Foreign, Familiar, Formative”: Join us for an introductory series on the Bible, exploring the ways in which the Bible is simultaneously distant from our modern sensibilities, recognizable as an artifact of culture, and necessary to our lives of faith. We aim to tackle issues such as how many bibles are there, what’s in the Bible, what do we mean by inspiration, how is the Bible formed, etc. Adult Forum begins every Sunday at 9:15 AM in the Parish Hall. Childcare is available. Grab some coffee and join the conversation!
Lenten Series: Save the date for our Lenten series taking place Wednesdays in March starting at 6pm. We will begin with a soup/salad dinner, followed by topical breakout group studies, and closing with Evening Prayer.
Weekday Bible Study: We are now holding Bible Study on Wednesday’s at 10:30am in the Guild Room. We will be using the text published by Forward Movement, “Bible Women: All Their Words and Why they Matter” by Lindsay Hardin Freeman. As before, the bible study is now open to both men and women. Join us!

Wednesday Service with Eucharist: We are happy to announce that a weekly noon Eucharistic service will be offered in the All Saints chapel. Immediately following the service, we will gather for a brown bag lunch for a time of fellowship in the parish hall. Join us!
The All Saints Library is Online: The All Saints Church Library has more than 2,000 catalogued books on file. And now the library is online.  Check it out!! It is also a great resource center for learning, research, and enjoyment.  The library is open during regular office hours and during weekend services.  If you are interested in viewing the library website, or are interested in perusing through this great library, please request a membership here or contact Tom Summers.
Welcoming Children in Worship: In the last year we have been fortunate to welcome a number of new children and young families and introduce a new soft space that has been well received.  As part of this ongoing conversation and aspiration, if you have any ideas or concerns about how we continue to welcome children in worship,  please reach out to Rev. Andria.
Altar Guild: Calling all Marthas! (Many hands make light work)
The Altar Guild Needs Helping Hands. Commitment: One monthly meeting. One monthly set-up. Training: Provided by Altar Guild members. We have pictures with examples and lists. We have patient and kind people to guide you. (For me, the unexpected return blessing is learning about Holy Mysteries, reverence for Sacred Elements, and the blessed company of all faithful people.) Spirit: Your desire to prepare for and care for All Saints Episcopal Church. Please consider joining us. We welcome you and we need you!
Hot Meals Volunteers Needed: We need volunteers for the 5th Saturday Hot Meals Program. At this time, we have a couple who are willing to be the cooks, but we still need two dishwashers and six people for set up and cleanup. Please let Nancy Patrick or the church office know if you can help. Thank you.

Thou shalt not be indifferent: On the 75th anniversary of the emancipation of Auschwitz, one of the few remaining survivors of the Nazi death camps made the following prophetic statement.

“Marian Turski, 93, who spoke for so many of his fellow survivors when he issued what amounted to a final warning to a human race that will soon lack first-hand testimony of the depths to which humankind can sink. He explained that “Auschwitz did not fall from the sky” but was the destination reached after a thousand smaller steps, each one stripping a single minority of its dignity and humanity. After the Shoah, Turski said, ‘The 11th commandment is: thou shalt not be indifferent.’”

Mustard Seed News: We are looking for volunteers willing to commit to one Saturday a month for 2 to 4 hours, especially the 3rd and 4th Saturdays of the month and "vacation" coverage for Fridays so "on call".

Duties include: being cashier, sorting and pricing, general tidying and having a good time with your other volunteers. On Saturdays, our Hot Meals guest can be rambunctious, but they are also looking for assistance at the St. Francis Closet, a listening ear, some general pleasant social interactions and weekly check-ins with us. This is also true of our regular customers, they come for the social interaction as well as the bargain shopping.  We train you for any of these tasks as we all started as beginners. Men and women welcome.

St Francis Closet:  Many thanks to those who have responded to my call for socks, blankets, and other things for the St. Francis Closet, a room in our church thrift store that provides clothing and other items for those in distress. Since many people have asked how to help with this ongoing need, here is a list of ways:

1.    Donate money and designate it for the “Deacon’s Discretionary Account” or “St. Francis Closet.”

2.    Donate clothing and other items: Used clothing you no longer wear. Soaps and shampoos from your latest hotel stay. Items from your last visit to the dentist. A tattered but warm blanket.

3.    Shop for items at your favorite thrift/discount/bargain store, even online. (Please ask Deacon Kathleen for suggestions.)

4.    Occasional help with simple mending.

5.    Assist safely “behind the scenes” in the St. Francis Closet as Kathleen waits on “customers” at the counter. Any amount of time on Saturdays, 11-3, is appreciated. (Great volunteer experience for students!)

6.    Tell others about the many outreach ministries at All Saints.

7.    Pray daily for the needy and all who care for them.

How to Help Neighbors in Distress:

If you see someone outside unsheltered whose life appears to be in danger or is in an apparent medical crisis, call 911. Otherwise, if you see someone about whom you are concerned, such as not being dressed for the weather conditions, call police non-emergency (503) 823-3333 and request a welfare check for that person.

To help someone find shelter and arrange transportation to shelter, please call 211.

People seeking to get warm on winter days when warming shelters are not open are welcome in government buildings that are open to the public, including, for example, libraries and community centers. Library hours are listed on Multnomah County Library’s
website. City community center information is listed here

During nights when severe weather has been declared, no one seeking shelter will be turned away.
