You are invited to Maryland Arts Day,

to show strong support for the arts, and their impact on the economic and cultural vitality of every Maryland community, especially your community!
Maryland Arts Day is the annual advocacy event connecting more than 600 artists, patrons, educators, administrators, and volunteers, from every county and Baltimore City, with lawmakers from their legislative districts.

What to expect if you go ~
Spend the morning with friends and colleagues from around the state, learning about the advocacy process and being inspired by  visionary artists and compelling advocates.  Then, meet in county delegation rooms with local legislators. Guided by the county arts council directors representing each district, participants will have an opportunity to tell legislators about the importance of the arts in Maryland, and specifically in their community.

This year, Maryland Arts Day is more crucial than ever ~
Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) has enjoyed record funding increases over the past 5 years (around 8-10% per year).  These increases have been instrumental in the creation of new grant programs and greatly increased funding going to each county in the state.  Much of this increase in funding has to do with a law that designates 5%  of the admissions and amusements tax for MSAC and to a fund called the Preservation of Cultural Arts. This law sunsets in the coming fiscal year (2021).  If no action is taken, we would see mostly level funding for the next decade and MSAC funding would fall behind inflation.  Part of our message at Maryland Arts Day is to support HB135 which continues the $1 millom transfer from the Preservation of the Cultural Arts to the Maryland State Arts Council.

Maryland Arts and Culture Capital Grant is a program established by HB127/SB287, a new bill introduced to set aside capital money from the state to go towards arts and culture organizations - this will amount to $12 million annually and would be available to all parts of the state in an equitable way.

More information about the day can be found on the website of Maryland Citizens for the Arts (MCA), the statewide arts advocacy and education organization hosting Maryland Arts Day annually. Founded over 40 years ago to provide “One Voice for all the Arts in Maryland,” MCA works to highlight the role the arts play in economic vitality of the state and the increased quality of life they provide for all Marylanders.
