Hello, Ward 6!

Featured in this Month's Issue: My Notice of Motion on Property Tax Assessment, Roads Improvement, Event Centre Engagement and more!

Notice of Motion: Property Tax Assessment Reform

I've introduced a Notice of Motion to be presented and debated by City Council on February 3, 2020 which calls on the Mayor to write to the Premier of Alberta on the issue. The Notice of Motion also calls for a resolution on the creation of a task force to be voted on by the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA).

The decline in the property values of downtown office buildings has resulted in a redistribution of property taxes among non-residential property taxpayers mainly outside the downtown core. As a result, small businesses that occupy these spaces have faced an unsustainable tax burden.

We’ve heard it loud and clear from the Calgary business community that the current tax regime is severely detrimental. The City of Calgary cannot continue to provide band-aid solutions to a systemic problem. I hope that our partners in the Province hear our call for reform to the system.

Road Improvements: Bow Trail Update

Last month, several new pathway connections were completed as part of the Bow Trail widening and intersection improvements project. The improvements include:
• Pathway extensions on the north and south side of Bow Trail from 85 St. to Old Banff Coach Rd. and Strathcona Blvd.
• An at-grade pedestrian crossing with signals on 77 St. east of 85 St. S.W.

Along with these connections, other major work including widening Bow Trail to two lanes in each direction, between 85 St. S.W. and Old Banff Coach Rd., and the addition of street lighting, traffic signals, safety cable barrier and a storm water system has also been completed.

Crews will be back to complete the remaining intersection work and landscaping along 85 St. and the west leg in spring 2020.

Launch of EV Charging Station in Ward 6
Getting around Calgary is going to get a whole lot easier for electrical vehicle drivers! In January, we launched the Calgary Westhills fast charging station alongside our partners at ATCO and Community Energy Association. Located right in the heart of Ward 6, not far from Sarcee Trail, Glenmore Trail and the future Ring Road! This is the first of four charging stations being installed in Calgary.
