UCI Sustainability Winter 2020 Week 5 Digest

Greetings Anteaters,

Thank you to everyone who filled out the Sustainability Resource Center impact survey! It makes a big difference and helps expand sustainability programming.

Today at 2:30 pm, we will be hosting the second Sustainability Co-curricular Working Group (SCWG) meeting of the quarter at the SRC (G464) on the fourth floor of the Student Center. We will be discussing preparations for next quarter's Earth Week events. If you or your organization is interested in collaborating on an Earth Week event, you are welcome to attend!

Please note that there will be no Sustainability Salon this week. In its stead, please attend the Necessity film screening at the same time. More information below.

Otherwise, we have a lot of exciting events and opportunities this week, so read on to learn about how you can get involved!

Screening of "Necessity: Oil, Water, and Climate Resistance"

Grounded in people and places at the heart of the climate crisis, “Necessity” traces the fight in Minnesota against the expansion of pipelines carrying toxic tar sands oil through North America. The story unfolds in a setting where indigenous activists and non-indigenous allies make use of the necessity defense in making a moral case for acts of civil disobedience. Many of these activists were part of the Standing Rock resistance in North Dakota and carry into this site of struggle their knowledge of resistance strategies, as well as their experiences of loss and trauma. The film is structured around two stories of activists engaged in civil disobedience and using the necessity defense. The film calls into question whether legal strategies are sufficient in responding to the scale of the global climate crisis.

"Will direct potable reuse make drinking water safer?" A Talk by Dr. Kara Nelson

Piped water systems have enabled billions of people around the globe to gain access to improved drinking water over the past 100 years. But, water scarcity, degrading infrastructure, and unplanned water reuse present challenges to the safety of drinking water.

Dr. Kara Nelson, professor of environmental engineering and associate dean of equity and inclusion in the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley, will illustrate how research to enable the practice of direct potable reuse is revealing insights that have the potential to make all drinking water safer. She will discuss innovative strategies for water quality monitoring and new perspectives on the water microbiome.

"The Humanities in a Time of Ecological and Constitutional Crises" A Talk by Robert Newman

Drawing on E. O. Wilson’s renaming of the Anthropocene as the Eremocene, or Age of Loneliness, Newman’s talk will consider the crisis of climate change as a Constitutional crisis as well as a crucial moment for the intervention of the humanities. In other words, how can we consider the role of the humanities in confronting the ecological crisis?

This talk is free and open to the public, but ask that you RSVP. A reception will follow in the Humanities Center on the first floor of Humanities Gateway.

UC Santa Cruz Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program

The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at UCSC works to diversify conservation by exposing early-career college students to field research, leadership and professional training. Each year, we select 20 students from around the U.S. and its territories to participate in our two-year conservation leadership program. Year 1 is an eight-week, paid, intensive summer course integrating conservation design, leadership and research experiences while traveling with a close group of peers and mentors. Year two is an eight-week, paid, intensive summer internship with a conservation organization or agency.

For more information and to apply visit
