"Human progress is our cause, liberty of thought our supreme wish, freedom of conscience our mission, and the guarantee of equal rights to all people everywhere our ultimate goal."

-The Scottish Rite Creed
From the Introduction of this month's suggested reading:
CONTEMPLATIVE MASONRY

"That disinclination to accept the existence of the spiritual nature in mankind became virtually culture-wide. It arose in Masonry, which was the last place one would have expected to see it. More than one Masonic leader has dismissed the entire spiritual, non-material aspect of Freemasonry as “that weird stuff,” which was of interest only to loons and had nothing to do with Masonry (which consisted of charity, fish-fries, and memorizing the words of the ritual). But there have been voices throughout time telling of the importance of the spiritual and man’s participation in it."

- Ill. Bro. Jim Tresner, 33°, Grand Cross

10°, ILLUSTRIOUS ELECT OF THE FIFTEEN

"Masonry teaches, and has preserved in their purity, the cardinal tenets of the old primitive faith, which underlie and are the foundation of all religions."
- - - Selected passages from Morals and Dogma - - -
"Masonry is the universal morality which is suitable to the inhabitants of every clime, to the man of every creed.  It has taught no doctrines, except those truths that tend directly to the well-being of man…”

This Degree is chiefly devoted to TOLERATION; and it inculcates in the strongest manner that great leading idea of the Ancient Art, that a belief in the one True God, and a moral and virtuous life, constitute the only religious requisites needed to enable a man to be a Mason.

Few believe in any religion because they have examined the evidences of its authenticity, and made up a formal judgment, upon weighing the testimony. Not one man in ten thousand knows anything about the proofs of his faith.
The good Mason does the good thing which comes in his way, and because it comes in his way; from a love of duty, and not merely because a law, enacted by man or God, commands his will to do it.

It is, in all instances, by steady labor, by giving enough of application to our work, and having enough time for the doing of it, by regular pains-taking, and the plying of constant assiduities, and not by any process of legerdemain, that we secure the strength and the staple of real excellence.

If we will but give aid to what were once Masonry's great schemes for human improvement, not fitfully and spasmodically, but regularly and incessantly, as the vapors rise and the springs run, and as the sun rises and the stars come up into the heavens, then we may be sure that great results will be attained and a great work done. And then it will most surely be seen that Masonry is not effete or impotent, nor degenerated nor drooping to a fatal decay.

10th Degree – ILLUSTRIOUS ELECT OF THE FIFTEEN

FOR REFLECTION
Do principles shape and control your conduct or are you guided by sentiment?
Are you tolerant even of intolerance?
Pike, in the lecture of this degree, expands upon and includes within its lessons those qualities of education and enlightenment only hinted at and the lecture of the preceding degree. With them he adds the great duty of toleration and builds us not to impose our creeds, sincerely held, upon others equally sincere and their different opinions.

Because Masonry welcomes all men of whatever religion and thus practices toleration, the distinction between Masonry and religion needs to be made. Religion asserts authority, but masonry counsels introspection and reflection on the great mysteries of the human condition. Masonry asserts no authority as to creeds, submits no prophets for judgment, offers no writings from God and reveals no divine truths beyond a simple morality.
It has no priesthood, demands no fixed tithe, dictates no sacraments and coerces no one with threats of eternal punishment beyond one’s own conscience. It offers no redeemer, teaches no dogma, demands no obedience except simple morality and courtesy, and contends with no just government. Masonry is tolerant, even supportive, of the most diverse religious believes. Religion has often divided men, but Mason reaffirms the brotherhood of man. If this is religion, it is only the most primitive kind and gives no reason for offense except by the power of its own virtues.

Essay by Ill. Bro. Jim Tresner, 33°, Grand Cross
“Free Thought, Free Speech, Free Conscience”
A couple points in the symbolism of the regalia deserve special notice. Ignorance is classified as a vice. We usually think of a vice as something a person does, but Pike tells us that Ignorance is as destructive as any action could possibly be.

Tyranny is given some special attention. We generally think of tyranny as the political oppression of some people. But tyranny comes in many forms. Tyranny takes place whenever any person or group says, “What I want is more important than what you want. My desires are more important than your desires. I matter more than you matter. Do it my way, or else.” Or even worse, “Believe my way or else.”

Tyranny does not equate with authority, but with attitude..
The essence of tyranny is selfishness... And if tyranny is selfishness in the world of material things, fanaticism is selfishness in the world of ideas and beliefs... Ignorance allows both fanaticism and tyranny to flourish, for only knowledge can form the basis of freedom. And ignorance is the primary weapon of the tyrant and the fanatic...  The fanatic always wants to benefit others. All he asks in return is your mind and soul."

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself."
Excerpt from the Lecture of the 10th Degree Ritual – ILLUSTRIOUS ELECT OF THE FIFTEEN
“Free Thought, Free Speech, Free Conscience”
Albert Pike’s interpretation of these Degrees (9th & 10th) presented a moral and philosophical lesson that found its germ in the rituals he studied. For Pike, the ruffians were spiritual tyrants symbolizing three chief vices that are enemies of human progress, namely Ignorance, Fanaticism, and Ambition.

Ignorance, symbolized by Jubelum-Akirop, was seen as the principal enemy of human freedom. His decapitation is the symbol of the utter destruction, which is the fit doom of this vice. The cavern in which he concealed himself is a symbol of the
intellectual darkness in which ignorance resides. The ruffian’s lamp, feebly lighting the cavern, represents the pale light that despotism substitutes for the Light of Truth, the symbol of which now adorns your apron.

The other two assassins, Jubela-Guibs and Jubelo-Gravelot, are symbols of Ambition (which breeds tyranny or despotism), and Fanaticism (from which springs intolerance and persecution).
In these Degrees you are reminded to become champions over these vices, even as the Elus succeeded in bringing the murderers of Hiram Abif to justice.

The Sacred Number Nine

by Midnight Freemason Guest Contributor
Illustrious Brother Christopher Tilley, 33°
(Published Posthumously earlier this month)
*Editors Note* Chris Tilley was an amazing man and Freemason. He was active, he was passionate and he was a researcher. Chris graduated last year and when he left us it was surreal. The outpouring for him was astounding. All who knew him, miss him. I was scrolling through some old emails and I cam upon an email from Chris. In it, he said, "Hey Robert, let me know what you think. You don't need to publish this, in fact it's probably silly. But let me know." I read it. I really liked it. But I never published it. I don't think he wanted the attention. Before deciding to publish this posthumous article, I reached out to some of my Brothers at the Valley of St. Louis for a blessing. They felt it would be a fitting tribute to Chris. So below is Chris' piece. This is dedicated to Chris and his family, friends and Brothers.
Most Freemasons are familiar with the numbers 3, 5, and 7, but those are just a few that have symbolic meaning. As an active Cryptic Mason, I have heard the number nine used in the Select Master degree. I would like to share what I have found about the number nine with you. In Freemasonry, Rosicrusianism, and in the Holy Bible, there are many important numbers that are repeated. I believe the number nine to be one of the most symbolic numbers. As we study Geometry, Pythagoras, and the Ancient Mysteries, numbers will become more relevant. This paper will be very repetitive with -you guessed it- the number nine...

What’s the Truth Behind
the All-Seeing Eye of Providence?

(Published on December 26, 2019 on Ancient-Origins.net, by Archaeologist Wu Mingren)

The Eye of Providence (known also as the all-seeing eye of God) is a well-known and popular symbol. This symbol has been used for centuries in both religious and secular contexts, and therefore its representation can be found in many places. For Americans, The Eye of Providence is most commonly found on the reverse of the United States one-dollar bill. This design is in turn derived from the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States.

The Eye of Providence is commonly depicted as a single, realistic-looking eye within one or more additional elements: a triangle, a burst of light, clouds, or all three. The earliest-known depiction of this symbol dates to the Renaissance. Nevertheless, eyes have had a strong symbolic meaning in many cultures over the course of history.

Like the ancient Egyptian Eye of Horus and Eye of Ra, the Eye of Providence is also associated with the divine. As mentioned already, the earliest-known representation of the Eye of Providence is from the Renaissance. This representation is found in a 1525 painting called the Supper at Emmaus by the Italian painter Jacopo Pontormo (left). The subject matter of this painting is the second half of the ‘Road to Emmaus Appearance’ story found towards the end of the Gospel according to Luke.

The Eye of Providence has also been associated with the Freemasons, and thanks to films, such as the 2004 National Treasure, starring Nicolas Cage, conspiracy theories linking the Freemasons with the founding of the United States have been popularized...

THIS MONTH'S SUGGESTED READING
CONTEMPLATIVE MASONRY

Basic Applications of Mindfulness, Meditation, and Imagery for the Craft

C.R. DUNNING, JR.

$4.95 Kindle Edition

Part of the work that has become Contemplative Masonry first appeared on the internet in 2000 as an anonymously authored guide to the exploration of Freemasonry through contemplative practices like prayer, meditation, breath work, chanting, and visualization. Sixteen years later, the original author of that material, C.R. “Chuck” Dunning, Jr., has come forward with a substantially expanded edition for those seeking to utilize Masonic symbolism and teachings in a way that is practical, accessible, inspiring, and profoundly transformative.
Contemplative Masonry is a much-needed resource for Masons seeking to undertake the challenging and rewarding work of deep self-knowledge and self-improvement. Brother Dunning provides Freemasons with a unique system of practices derived directly from the Degrees of Craft Masonry, without reliance upon other religious, spiritual, or esoteric traditions. He also shares the valuable wisdom and insights that come from decades of personal experience with contemplative practices.

"I would heartily recommend this book to any Mason who has wondered how he might engage more deeply with the Craft and enhance his quest for light. Brother Dunning has mapped out a practical approach to what he terms contemplative Masonry, which can be practiced by any brother, regardless of his religion or spiritual beliefs. I know of few Masons better qualified to serve as a guide to a specifically Masonic path of spiritual growth." — Jay Kinney, 33°, author of The Masonic Myth and editor of The Inner West

"Chuck Dunning takes us on a wonderful and enlightening journey of what has to occur in a man's body, mind, and spirit for him to actually improve himself in Masonry. He discusses the nature of inner work in Freemasonry, and he is eminently qualified to do so. He enlightens us with his wisdom and offers us a number of exercises which can lead us to the true treasure of manhood. This book is a must read for anyone wanting to know what is hidden in the language of Freemasonry." — Robert G. Davis, 33° G.C., author of The Mason's Words and Understanding Manhood in America

Further Excerpt from the introduction of CONTEMPLATIVE MASONRY:

"A contemplative Mason is therefore more than an academic student of Masonry. It is easy for us to read the published works of Masonic authors who qualify as contemplatives; however, simply absorbing whatever light they may reveal does not make us contemplative Masons. A true contemplative uses the faculties of the psyche as a collection of fine working tools. One learns to employ those tools with the proper measures of force and precision in order to more fully reveal the wisdom, strength, and beauty in whatever matter is chosen. One thus makes of oneself a true philosopher, a literal “lover of wisdom.” "

Each show will explore an idea or topic. Sometimes the topics will extend from Masonic practice into civics, philosophy, social sciences, literature and art. X-Oriente also is a passionate advocate for critical thinking skills. We'll never stop asking why, and we'll always look for evidence to back up our assertions."

In Kabbalah Revealed, an enlightening 16 episode series, Anthony Kosinec introduces “what Kabbalah is” and “what Kabbalah isn’t,” in this overview of some of its basic concepts, and the difference between authentic Kabbalah and how Kabbalah is popularly viewed. Essentially, this is the process of how to reveal Kabbalah’s hidden aspect: the Upper Worlds—what is hidden behind our five senses.

FOUNDATION MISSION STATEMENT

It is the mission of the Scottish Rite Foundation of Missouri, Inc. to enhance the lives of the children of Missouri by actively embracing high social, moral and spiritual value through the RiteCare Childhood Language Program, Youth Programs, Scholarships and Disaster Relief.

FOUNDATION HISTORY AND PURPOSE

The Scottish Rite Foundation of Missouri, Inc. was originally incorporated in 1946 as the Scottish Rite Endowment, Philanthropic, and Educational Foundation, Inc.  Its purpose was to provide the public charities of the Order and go beyond that given by the Almoner to needy brethren.

The Foundation concentrates on four principal charities:

  1. To provide financial support of the Orient RiteCare Clinics;
  2. To grant undergraduate scholarships to deserving individuals attending an accredited college or university and pursuing a bachelor’s degree;
  3. To give financial assistance for medical, dental, and personal needs to children who would otherwise have to do without the treatment or benefit; and
  4. To give financial assistance to Missouri DeMolays to offset their expenses related to leadership training and education.

It has been a matter of custom and precedent to urge those financially able Scottish Rite members who are 32° to give $32, those who are KCCH to give $32.50 and 33° brethren to give $33 annually to the Foundation.  There is also an Albert Pike Society which is composed of members who give $10,000 to the Foundation.  The contribution may be made in lump sum or over a period of ten years.  Donors receive recognition by having their names inscribed on a plaque which lists every member and which is displayed in each of the Valleys.
