February is Library Lover's Month
How To Love Your Library:
CONTRIBUTE
- Donate your time, money, and expertise to your library.
- Remember your library in your estate planning.
- Write a check to your library’s Friends group
- Give to the library through your company’s matching program for charitable giving.
BE A FRIEND
- Join the Friends of the Rosendale Library. We meet on the 2nd Sat. of every other month, next meeting is March 14 at 10am at the Rosendale Café.
- Volunteer to staff events run by the Friends.
VOLUNTEER
- Offer a committed helping hand to your library’s staff.
PROMOTE
- Write to your state and federal legislators and insist that library service be viewed (and funded) as a necessary public service. Click here to sign up for the New York Library Association’s list of trusted library advocates.

- Write a letter to the editor of your newspapers or call in to a radio talk show to let them know how important your library is to you and how important it is to give the libraries full funding.
- Attend Library Advocacy Day in Albany on Tues. Feb. 25. Library advocates will be meeting with legislators to show support for full library finding. Contact the library for information about getting on the bus to Albany that day. The Friends of the Rosendale Library will even pay for your bus ticket!
- The Division of Library Development has calculated that for every $1 in state aid to the Mid-Hudson Library System our library’s community received $13 worth of services. That is a fantastic return on investment we should all be concerned about preserving!

Calling All Advocates!
We need your help
The Governor unveiled his budget proposal last week and once again it was not good news for Library Aid:
Proposed State Library Aid: $91.6 million - The Governor's suggested funding is $5 million less than what was in last year's enacted state budget. This proposed cut fails to acknowledge the crucial role libraries serve in our communities, and the contributions they make to our state's education system.
Proposed Library Construction Aid: $14 million- Library Construction Aid received a $20 million increase in last year's enacted budget - Governor Cuomo has proposed eliminating that additional funding. The State Division of Library Development estimates that library renovation and construction needs are $1.5 billion statewide. Over half of public libraries in NYS are 60+ years old, and an additional 30% are 30+ years old. Investment in the Library Construction Aid program must be increased to address aging infrastructure, energy inefficient buildings and the evolving roles of libraries in their communities.
This is the fourth year of proposed cuts to library funding! It's going to be important that we have a strong state-wide voice in support of library funding this year.
Here are three things you can do immediately to help with this year's advocacy effort:

- Help us tell the story with photos and numbers! Participate in the Real People. Real Dollars. Campaign at your library! - Join us, and encourage others to join us, in Albany for Library Advocacy day on February 25! MHLS makes the day easy by scheduling meetings with each Assembly member and Senator that represents our region and through arranging transportation. Thanks to the generosity of area Friends Groups the ticket to ride the bus this year is just $5! That's a lot less than it would cost you to park in Albany let alone the cost of gas! We are off to a good start with 2020, because recently we added nearly 700,000 titles to the catalog for Rosendale residents through an online service called hoopla. Rosendale patrons are able to create a free hoopla account, and download or stream audiobooks, e-books, e-comic books, music, and videos such as Acorn TV. The library pays for each item checked out. As of now, we are limiting checkouts to four items per month in order to control costs. The advantages of hoopla are many. First, there is no waiting! When you find something in the catalog, you can instantly borrow it. Second, the hoopla interface is super easy and intuitive. We wish all e-books and audiobooks were this user-friendly, and are glad to offer this new service. Please pardon our dust as we are moving some of the different parts of the collection and equipment around to find the best place for people to use them. We brought the magazines up front, as well as the newspapers, and now have a subscription of Consumer Reports that we circulate. We have started photocopying the Sunday Times crossword puzzle so people can pick up a free copy at the desk—it can make the winter pass more quickly. Here’s to a fulfilling February!

The Anna Mae Auchmoedy / Lottie Burns Scholarship 2020
The Matthew C. Bowen Memorial Scholarships
Every Spring the Friends of the Rosendale Library give a scholarship to a graduating high school senior. This year there are three awards being given. Each award is $1,000. The money is to be used for college expenses, books, etc. Students from Rondout Valley, Kingston and New Paltz high schools who live in the Rosendale Library district may apply.
Applications have been sent to the above high school guidance offices and to the Rosendale Youth Center. They are also available at the Rosendale Library desk.
The deadline for submissions is March 13. Please bring completed applications to the library or mail to:

Anna Mae Auchmoedy was the woman we have to thank for the original idea of the Rosendale Library. Anna Mae and the Comus Club of Rosendale started our library in 1940. The Women’s Club of Rosendale was key in promoting and supporting our young library. Lottie Burns worked very closely with Anna Mae for many years.
Eric Bowen has funded two scholarships in memory of his son Matthew C. Bowen. Matthew had many interests, he was an avid reader and cyclist.

Friends of the Rosendale Library Elections
At the January 11, 2020 Friends’ meeting, Eileen Hall was elected president for a 2 year term, Mary Potratz was elected vice-president for a one year term and Eileen Meltzer was elected secretary for a 2 year term. Jo Ann Reuben continues in her current term as treasurer. We thank everyone who volunteers their time as a member of the Friends and for their generous donation of time and energy that supports the success of our library.
