Steaming Ahead Project Information
The Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS) was founded in 1961, at a time when rapid change was sweeping away much of the infrastructure of the Victorian railways. The Society has been built into the Four-Star visitor attraction it is today through the drive and passion of committed volunteers, members and staff. The Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway allows the collections to be seen in operation in an authentic environment – Scotland’s railway history is truly alive at Bo’ness, from the best of Victorian engineering all the way through to the results of post war modernisation. Long established within the local community of Bo’ness, Falkirk District, SRPS is made up of:

1. Museum of Scottish Railways
2. Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway
3. SRPS Railtours

Steaming Ahead is an ambitious project that will focus on the Society’s steam locomotive collection with the core aim of transferring skills and knowledge to the next generation through activities and training for volunteers, trainees and apprentices in a newly erected steam engineering facility. The new steam facility will provide an opportunity for visitors to observe the work of staff and volunteers from a public viewing gallery. It will be the focus of new interactive interpretation and detailed information on the work being carried out on the locomotives. It will also provide much improved working conditions and opportunities for the volunteers and greater protection for the steam locomotive collection. This project will create a new, shorter visitor trail around the site connecting visitors from the station platform to the new steam shed and onto the Museum of Scottish Railways. The museum will have a new entrance installed which will provide a much-needed heated reception and visitor engagement area with refreshments. A range of different types of interpretation will be developed for visitors along the trail and in the new facilities. A comprehensive programme of activities will be scheduled for visitors and volunteers and it is anticipated that this project will see an increase in local visitors and those from further afield.

The skills required to conserve, restore and maintain working steam locomotives are at risk. It is more than 50 years since steam locomotives operated on the main line. The SRPS skilled steam volunteers want to pass on their skills and experiences to a younger generation of apprentices, trainees and volunteers. Without these skills, the ability of SRPS to maintain and operate steam locomotives will be at risk. The Steaming Ahead project will provide an opportunity for young people and volunteers to learn new skills and gain new experiences, building capacity within the site.

The project will enable:
 succession planning to create a new generation of skilled staff and volunteers
 an improved management and maintenance of steam restoration programme resulting in 4 locomotives available for use and hire
 an up-to-date locomotive workshop with a skilled workforce which allows SRPS to undertake work for other heritage railways
 income generation from maintenance work
 transformation in the way SRPS engages and interacts with visitors and the wider community
 training and employment opportunities and providing young people with employability skills
 capital investment in buildings and interactive interpretation. Facilities will be in use for many years to come.
