In the last edition of The Vine we wrote about a new film, A Hidden Life. It is now in theatres around Australia. Rarely do we have an opportunity to see a film dealing with faith and conscience in such a respectful and serious way. Director Terrence Malick brings us the story of farmer Franz Jägerstätter.

After watching the film at the Cannes Film Festival Sr Rose Pacette wrote: 'If you're not a person in a hurry, this is the 2020 film for you. Take your time and relish the artistry, the tension, the anxiety of choosing to follow one's conscience ... This is a film about discernment, conscience, character and integrity. It is about true freedom, heartbreak, humanity and family. The ethical and religious questions of the film ask us: Can one person truly make a difference in this world? Is it worth it to even try?' For the review of the film by Sr Rose Pacette click here.

The book on which much of the film is based, Franz Jägerstätter: Letters and Writings from Prison is available from Orbis Books. Malick obtained the rights from Orbis for the film, and passages from these letters form much of the voiceover narration.

This is a film that will delight lovers of beautiful music (works by Mozart, J.S. Bach, and Beethoven), cinematography and dialogue (internal and external) that opens the heart, mind and soul to profound insight and wisdom. For the trailer click here.

In June 2007, Pope Benedict XVI declared Jägerstätter a martyr. On 26 October 2007, he was beatified. His feast day is the day of his baptism, 21 May.

... things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.
