Ballard Multimodal Corridor

02/14/2020 – Ballard Multimodal Corridor Construction Update

Over the past few weeks, crews worked on the traffic signal at the intersection of 28th Ave NW and NW Market St, and continued with lighting work along NW Market St.

Please take care when traveling through the work zone as lanes may shift.

Businesses are open!
Upcoming work

This schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change.

On Thursday, February 21 and Friday, February 22, crews are scheduled to work on the traffic signal at the intersection of 24th Ave NW and NW Market St. Uniformed police officers will be on site to help direct traffic while crews complete signal work at the intersection.

As early as March 7, King County Metro will begin installing new trolley wires along NW Market St. We expect this work to last approximately four weeks. Parking along NW Market St will be restricted during this time. Crews will install trolley wires for eastbound buses on NW Market St first, beginning at 32nd Ave NW and working their way east towards 24th Ave NW. Once wires are installed for eastbound buses on NW Market St, crews will move to install trolley wires for westbound buses, beginning at NW 54th St and moving towards 24th Ave NW.

King County Metro crews will be working 7 days a week to complete this work. General work hours are 8 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday, and 8 AM to 12 AM on weekends. For more information on this work, please contact King County Metro.

Crews are working to reduce the number of barriers along the corridor. The orange barriers along NW Locks Pl and NW 54th St serve as a pedestrian detour and will remain in place until the spring.

As work continues along the project corridor and limits space for cyclists on the road, please remember to share the sidewalk and be aware of your surroundings.
Crews continued lighting work along NW Market St this week.
As crews wrap up winter construction along the corridor, you may be hearing from us less. We will send construction updates as needed, and resume weekly updates when construction picks up again in the spring.

What to expect during construction
  • Typical work hours from 7 AM to 10 PM, Monday through Saturday
  • Crews may work some nights and weekends to minimize impacts to traffic during weekday commute times
  • On-street parking and lane restrictions near work locations
  • Temporary sidewalk and crosswalk closures with signed detours
  • Noise, dust, concrete odors, and vibration
  • Access to businesses and residences will remain open, driveway restrictions will apply
  • Work is weather dependent, so timing of work may change if needed
Stay connected Thanks for your patience and support while we complete this project. We’re working to minimize construction impacts as much as possible.

Other Nearby Projects

A private developer will begin construction on the south side of NW Market St between 28th Ave NW and 24th Ave NW. This work is not associated with Ballard Multimodal Corridor improvements.

Street Name Change

As of November 4th, the City of Seattle renamed a block of NW 54th St to help reduce confusion for emergency service providers. There were previously two intersections with the same street names: NW 54th St and NW Market St, 1.5 miles apart. Duplicate names create confusion for emergency response dispatchers and can delay response. The new name is "NW Locks Pl" in the location shown below on the image below.
NW Market St Paving

Beginning in summer of 2020, we will be paving NW Market St between 24th Ave NW and 15th Ave NW. This project includes sidewalk repairs, curb ramp upgrades, water main replacements, and stormwater drainage improvements. SPU Ship Canal

Seattle Public Utilities and King County are working together on the Ship Canal Water Quality Project to prevent polluted stormwater and sewage from entering Seattle waterways. Work in Ballard includes 24th Ave NW pier reconstruction, work on the western end of the tunnel, a new pump station and new pipe systems. To learn more about the project or sign up for project emails, visit our Ship Canal Water Quality website.
