Alumni Spotlight: Lynda Ruffolo
|
Lynda Ruffolo has had the unique experience of being both a Gateway graduate and an adjunct instructor. As a newly single parent years ago, Lynda was searching for a career that would allow her to support her family and would fit around her work schedule. She decided to enroll in the Medical Assistant technical diploma program at Gateway and completed her courses in only one year.
Lynda credits her instructors for helping her and serving as mentors. She returned to Gateway a year later to obtain an associate degree while working full-time. “Gateway was accommodating by scheduling clinicals and other classes at different times. It was a huge help and enabled me to be successful in my pathway.”
Lynda worked at United Hospital Systems for 10 years before taking additional classes, this time at Cardinal Stritch University, to further her education, focusing on oncology. Through a partnership with Gateway, those classes were held at the Burlington Center. She has worked at Advocate Aurora for 11 years as an oncology registered nurse, with a specialty in infusion. Ruffolo continues to be inspired by her patients.
“Some people ask how I can work in oncology, because they think it must be depressing. For me, it’s a blessing to care for such courageous individuals, to focus on what they value and what they sense is truly important,” said Lynda.
Lynda returned to Gateway for a third time a few years ago, this time as an adjunct instructor. She taught a medical terminology course. Lynda is a proud advocate for Gateway, its faculty and staff, who made it seamless for her to achieve her goals.
