Rather than focusing on contemporary irritants in the U.S. - EU trade relationship, this conversation with Bernd Lange will provide a perspective on transatlantic approaches to sustainable trade. To this end, the discussion aims at identifying potential common ground on linking trade to labor and environmental standards. A host of recent changes on the European side include the newly launched “Green new deal”, plans for a carbon border adjustment mechanism, and added momentum for enhanced EU enforcement of labor and environmental commitments in free trade agreements. On the U.S. side, the USMCA has resulted in a novel approach to the trade and labor nexus while several carbon tax bills, which propose adjustments at the border, have been introduced in Congress.
