Sunday Morning Worship

February 16, 2020

Katie McQuage-Loukas, Congregational Life Coordinator
"The Greatest of These is Love"

In a season that tends to celebrate only one specific model of love, it is important to lift up all the other ways of love in which we are held. What would a world built on all those ways of loving look like?  It is so difficult to hold to love in the face of politics, economics, and all our daily challenges, but infusing those facets with love changes the foundations of our lives, as individuals, and as a community.

A Loving Community

This week we will emphasize the value of spending time with people of different needs as well as people of different generations within the community. The story we will read is that of Adin Ballou and the Hopedale Community in Milford, Massachusetts. This community worked together to show the world a better way to live by living in peace, caring for the hungry and sick, and loving one another.

See you all on Sunday!

Pastoral News / Updates and Transitions

Stephen writes:

"Early on Weds morning this week, Ellen Slater called me to let me know that her father, Graham Sterling was at home in hospice care.  We agreed I would visit them in Norwood at one o'clock--but only an hour or two later, she called to say that he had passed.  He was a remarkable man, and played a great role in the life of the church over the last 40 years.  He was instrumental in building and designing our Chapel, and of editing Rev. Rhys Williams' collection of sermons--and supported his beloved Judy as a Trustee, and was the dad of the head of my Search Committee, Gordon Sterling.  I will have much more to say down the line, but I wanted you to know that there will be a brief service at Burke's Funeral home this coming Saturday at one o'clock.  And there will be a memorial service in our sanctuary sometime soon...

"Ellen writes of her father, "From November 1923 and until today, Graham demonstrated qualities of curiosity, adventure, and quest for meaning illuminating. These qualities remain in the universe, but we have to look for them differently. We love him. With appreciation for all your encouragement along his way, and your thoughts and prayers today and ahead."

If you have pastoral updates and news you would like to share with the congregation, please contact editor Peter Banos. Even if you don't want your concern or joy in the Friday e-news, our ministers always want to hear from you.  Thanks!

Unitarian Universalist General Assembly

Would you like to meet Unitarian Universalists from around the world?

As Unitarian Universalists, we believe that democracy is a religious value.

To practice democracy, each year the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations has a General Assembly where Unitarian Universalist delegates from congregations across the nation and the world meet and discuss our values, sing, read and celebrate music, share best practices on justice work and education, learn about our history, and vote on common commitments.

Resolution are presented and voted on by delegates from different congregations. The Resolutions and resulting actions can inspire hundreds of congregations to take action, such as the Green Sanctuary program, which creates support for congregations to become more environmentally conscious.

Each congregation can send members in proportion to their population. First Church can send 4 delegates including clergy.

This year (2020) General Assembly will take place in Providence, Rhode Island.  Anyone who wishes to be a delegate should contact First Church Boston Denominational Affairs Chairman, David Reno. Contact David at:  atreno@verizon.net

Chancel Flowers

Wouldn’t it be great to have the opportunity to add beauty to the Sanctuary in honor, or in memory, of someone you love?  Or, in recognition of a meaningful event in your life?

We’d like to invite members of the congregation to offer a flower arrangement for the chancel table for Sunday worship. The person or event being honored, or in whose memory the gift has been given, will be noted in the order of service.

Those offering the flowers can either arrange for the flowers to be delivered from a florist of their choosing, or request that the office do so, and then simply write a check to cover the cost.

Please add your name and contact information to the sign-up sheet Sunday morning, along with a Sunday date that you’d like to make your gift, or simply email office@firstchurchboston.org.
