1. Get Involved: Comment sought on alternative licensure pilot

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education voted on January 28 to release a proposed amendment to the Regulations for Educator Licensure and Preparation Program Approval (download) for public comment. The proposed amendment is designed to identify, pilot, and learn more about alternative ways to assess new educators’ knowledge and skills; be responsive to feedback from the field; and promote equitable access for qualified educators.

Interested individuals can provide public comment on the proposed amendment through an online survey through Friday, March 13. The Board is expected to vote on the proposed amendment on April 28.

2. What We’re Reading: Examining Bias

In this article in Teaching Tolerance, educators at Boston’s Gardner Pilot Academy talk about teacher-led professional development about examining educators’ own biases. As part of the work, they invited paraprofessionals, students, and families to share their perspectives on the issue.

“I think what was great about it was that it wasn’t someone coming in and saying what we’re lacking and, ‘Here’s what you need to do instead,’” one teacher who led the work said. “It was truly from the community: the community asking for our strengths, our challenges and for us to pull together.”

3. The Buzz: #LoveTeaching Week

February 14-21 is #LoveTeaching Week, a chance for educators to celebrate their craft and the magic that appears in classrooms every day. Learn more online, and share your own stories with the #LoveTeaching hashtag.
