The City of Santa Barbara is Hiring Lifeguards!!

The City of Santa Barbara is recruiting Pool Lifeguards for the 2020 summer. If you or anyone you know may be interested in working as a Pool Lifeguard this summer, please share this information with them.

To be a City of Santa Barbara Pool Lifeguard, no experience is necessary. To qualify candidates must be; at least 15 years old and able to pass a swim test and in-person interview.

The benefits of lifeguarding include:

1. Developing strong leadership skills-Lifeguards must be responsible, alert and assertive when they see unsafe behavior. This job leaves no room for shyness and people can truly develop their leadership skills by becoming a lifeguard.

2. Better communication skills-Lifeguards must interact with people regularly throughout the day (patrons and team members). This forces lifeguards out of their comfort zone and teaches them ways to proactively address safety issues as well as policies.

3. Improved self-confidence-Lifeguarding is a position that requires a great deal of responsibility, and is an important job because Lifeguards do make a difference, this has been proven to boost self-confidence.

4. Development of desirable skills for future careers- Being a lifeguard gives you skills that other professionals and hiring managers like to see in potential employees. Teamwork, Self Confidence, Communication and Leadership are all vital skills that are often not learned in school. They are learned through life experience. Lifeguards certainly have a jump on their competition when it comes to posses sing these skills and they can often adapt to their surroundings by leveraging those very skills.

Swimming Lessons

Did you know that, "Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths" (World Health Organization, 2018). According to the CDC "Taking part in in formal swimming lessons reduces the risk of drowning among children aged 1 to 4 years." Furthermore, swim lessons teach children to have fun, while respecting water and group swimming lessons help children develop their social skills. Swim lessons start at Ortega Park Pool beginning May 26th and private / semi-private swim lessons are available at Los Banos on Saturday and Sunday afternoons now.

SBSC Coaches Tip

Freestyle Recovery
High elbow recovery generally leads to a flatter freestyle. This technique essentially makes it easier to initiate a deep catch when the hand enters the water, it is more efficient, and also puts less stress on the shoulders. For these reasons in particular, bent arm is a good recovery style regardless of distance.

To practice: while warming up, think of the hands pointing toward the ropes during the recovery phase, and the hands reaching towards the wall during entry on every stroke (as if it is your last stroke coming in to the wall). This will help with lengthening the body and thus, engaging the core for a more efficient freestyle.
