A love built at ASU forges a new path for future Sun Devils

They met on their first day, in their first class, almost 30 years ago.

It was Introduction to Architecture at Arizona State University. He sat in the second row. She sat directly in front of him in the first row, with two guys on either side of her vying for her attention.

“I was this nerdy 17-year-old back in the second row trying to strike up a conversation with them,” Brian Swanton, urban planning alumnus '95 and master's degree in public administration alumnus '03, recalled of that August day in 1991. “But honestly, she was two years older than me and I figured that she was out of my league.”

Leah Swanton, urban planning alumna '95 and master's degree in public administration alumna '09, recalled the same initial meeting with a chuckle. “I remember he seemed really young and a little immature, but I kept an open mind... It started off as a friendship and I didn’t really imagine that first day it would turn out to what it has been now,” Leah said.

Today, 21 years of marriage and three children later, Brian and Leah Swanton, both strong figures in the Phoenix urban planning and development community, still reflect on that day as the start of their enduring love for the place and institution that brought them together.

Celebrate love and Arizona statehood with a new episode of Earth + Humans!

February 14th is most commonly known as Valentine's Day, but this day is also special for another reason, because on February 14, 1912, Arizona became the 48th state!

For this special episode of Earth + Humans, we talk to three students in our PhD of geography program to ask them about their favorite places to visit in Arizona, how they handle our extreme heat, and their interesting research topics.

Listen now and see if anyone picked your favorite spot to visit!

Next week: Colloquium with Dan Shugar, University of Calgary

Join us on February 21 from 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in Coor 5536 for our latest colloquium.

For this session, we are very excited to welcome Dr. Dan Shugar, associate professor of geoscience and director of the Environmental Sciences Program at the University of Calgary, who will be presenting his talk "What is happening to the world's glacier lakes?"

About the talk:

Glacial lakes are rapidly growing in response to climate change and glacier retreat; some present an acute risk to downstream communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems in the event of an outburst flood. The role of these lakes as terrestrial storage for glacial meltwater is currently unknown and therefore not accounted for in global sea level models. Here, we provide the first global glacier lake database and analysis of glacial lake extent, volume and change. We use scaling relations to estimate an increase of global glacier lake volume of about 48% to 156.5 km3 over the past quarter-century, which represents a sea level equivalent of about 0.43 mm. As glaciers continue to retreat and feed glacial lakes, the implications for natural hazards and water resources are of considerable societal and ecological importance.

Date: Friday, February 21
Time: 1:30 - 3:00 p.m.
Location: Coor 5536

Planning for a Resilient Community – Tues Feb 19, 9:00 am, Burton Barr Library
In this workshop you’ll learn about the importance of collaboration in addressing the challenges of air quality and heat in Maricopa County. If unchecked these challenges will continue to have negative effects on public health and economic growth. Despite efforts to improve air quality in the Valley, we still face problems with high levels of ozone and are at risk for exceeding acceptable regulatory levels. As temperatures rise, so do health concerns for our most vulnerable populations as they deal with increased urban heat. Learn from guest speakers about efforts currently underway to address ozone and heat through the development of regional resilience plans that will be created with input from everyone living in the Valley.
