Question 1

For the installation of a solid-fuel-burning insert or hearth-mounted stove with a certified chimney liner system, section 6.5 of CSA B365-17 allows for the throat area to be cut out of

Answer                Responses
a) an artificial fireplace. 0.00%
b) a code compliant, site-built fireplace, with a certified, air-circulating,
steel fireplace liner.
41.94%
c) a factory-built fireplace 3.23%
d) All of the above. 4.30%
e) None of the above. 50.54%

Rationale

TC Comment: The options changed in the CSA B365-17 version. Prior versions of CSA-B365 did not distinguish between an uncertified site-built steel-lined fireplace liner or one that was certified to ULC-S639. According to the new wording:
Section 6.5.7 — When an uncertified steel fireplace liner with an air-circulating chamber must be cut to accommodate the passage of a chimney liner, the installation shall be made to minimize the passage of room air into the chimney cavity. The seal shall not block the passage of air through the air-circulating chamber.

Question 2

What is/are the only code compliant, field-fabricated method(s) of passing a breech pipe through an exterior combustible wall to a masonry chimney?

Answer                Responses
a) Maintain an 18” airspace from the breech pipe to combustible materials. CSA  B365-17 Figure 2 a) 9.57%
b) Maintain a 9” air clearance with shielding from the breech pipe to combustible materials. CSA B365-17 Figure 2 b) 2.13%
c) A section of insulated chimney shall be used as a radiation shield. 23.4%
d) All of the above. 58.51%
e) None of the above. 6.38%

Rationale

CSA B365 Figure 2 c). is the only “field-fabricated” method available. See also: CSA B365-17 Section 6.3.5 Where a breech pipe passes through an exterior wall of combustible construction to a masonry chimney,

  1. the breech pipe shall be installed by means of a pass-through certified for the intended use; or
  2. where use of a certified pass-through is not possible, a section of insulated chimney shall be used as a radiation shield [see Figure 2 c)].

Question 3

According to Table 2 of CSA B365-17, if the ceiling clearance of a certified appliance is not included on the appliance label, or in the installation manual, the only measurement that could be proven correct would be

Answer                Responses
a) 84” from base of appliance to combustible ceiling.                21.28%
b) 60” from top of appliance to combustible ceiling. 60.64%
c) 96” from base of appliance to combustible ceiling. 0.00%
d) 82” from base of appliance to combustible ceiling. 12.77%
e) All of the above. 0.00%
f) None of the above. 5.32%

Rationale

CSA B365-17 Table 2 Clearances to combustible material for uncertified appliances using solid fuel (See Clauses 8.2.3 and 8.2.4.)

TC Comment: The ceiling height requirement for a “certified” appliance is based on ULC-S627. So, if ceiling height is not stated on a certification label nor in the installation manual, follow the ceiling height requirement from ULC-S627 Test Booth.

ULC-S627 Test Booth with floor to ceiling is 2.1m less wood ceiling = soft conversion 82”

Question 4

According to Table 3 and Section 8 of CSA B365-17, the installation of a (minimum 28 gauge) metal wall shield will allow for a clearance reduction to the ash door or loading door side of an uncertified radiant space heater from 48” to

Answer Responses
a) 12"  0.00%
b) 16" 32.98%
c) 18" 6.38%
d) None of the above   60.64%

Rationale

B365-17 Section 8.2.2 – A passageway of at least 600mm (24 in) shall be provided for access to inspection openings.

TC Comment: CSA B365 Table 3 does not allow for shielding the loading or ash door side of an appliance.

Question 5

According to Section 6.2 of CSA B365-17, when a certified oil-fired appliance and a solid-fuel-burning appliance certified to ULC-S627 are connected to the same chimney, the flue for the oil-fired appliance shall always be located

Answer           Responses
a) above (downstream of) the solid-fuel-burning appliance.                     56.38%
b) below (upstream of) the solid-fuel-burning appliance. 20.21%
c) None of the above. 23.40%

Rationale

CSA B365 Section 6.2.11. Only a solid-fuel-burning appliance certified for use in conjunction with oil-fired equipment shall be connected to a venting system serving an oil-fired appliance.

TC Comment: The only scenario where a solid-fuel-burning appliance could share the same venting system as the certified oil-fired appliance and be compliant is where the solid-fuel-burning appliance is certified to CSA B366 1-11.
