From the office
Hello Everyone,
Hope this finds you all well.
Thinking of all our members across the country. Am aware that many did not have a pleasant end to an already tricky 2019 and the start of 2020 has also quite tough for many.
Fingers crossed that many of you have been under a cloud or two and the rest of 2020 isn't as harsh as the previous few years.
If we can be assistance in any way, please don't hesitate to contact the office or a Council member.
2020 Herd Inventory paperwork has been posted out. If you haven't received this or have any questions, please contact the office.
Some members have contacted me after receiving spam emails which look to be sent from the ABGA office. If you receive something that doesn't look right, please don't hesitate to give me a call.
Please see a reminder on the bank details below, and remember to use your member number as a reference,
Kind regards,
Kate

DNA Testing
A reminder that all bull calves require DNA testing before registration.
Members are encouraged to also get parent verification (PV) testing completed when submitting DNA testing.
There is no added cost to the testing. Still $33 at Zoetis.
PV testing remains optional for ABGA registered animals.
If you haven't had your dams tested previously, then they would also need to be DNA tested in order for PV testing to occur.
If you are selling cattle, it is suggested to remove tail hairs before sending them on a truck. Keep in a paper bag or paper envelope. This helps to preserve the DNA within the sample.
Please don't hesitate to contact the office if you have any questions regarding DNA testing.

All shows were great to attend and at Ballarat the belties did get a special mention from the judge, Tom Lawson, in the interbreed. Besides the socialising part of showing it was another good opportunity to show the public our beautiful belties. The weather was on our side at every show. At the Yea Show the young kids loved the belties and used them for the junior handlers competition. Nola’s calf Whiskey was very well behaved and one of the few calves at the shows this season. Yea show had by far the most animals, around 75.

Belted Galloways in Iceland - Jo Kreher
Tony and I were very fortunate and had the unique experience of being able to do a self drive road trip around Iceland in the middle of their winter, in December 2019. During our travels we came across a small mob of belties. I apologise for the long shot, but this was the closest I could get to them. What was very interesting is that we only saw one other small mob of cattle out in an open area (not sure what they were). All other cattle along with the sheep were housed in barns for the duration of winter.
They really are hardy animals as you have no idea of the strength of the wind in Iceland unless you've been there in a storm. We were there for a few. Even had enough snow for an awesome snow angel☃️
