HEALTHTECH NEWS 🗞

How is digital health being used to fight back against Coronavirus?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered chatbots have been used to screen people for coronavirus. Currently, the chatbots have revealed a large number of people with the flu. Which is probably reasonable considering the fact it is flu season. One company 98point6 managed to highlight two patients, however, it was not deemed necessary for them to isolated and/or referred for official testing. A positive that has been noted is the reassurance that these companies are apparently providing. With those, who would otherwise not, seeking treatment and help for their symptoms.

In line with this the parent company Bespoke has launched an AI powered chatbot advisor Bebot to keep passengers informed about the coronavirus outbreak. The widespread notoriety of the outbreak, which has alrerady reached 28 countries, has been one of the key topics in the news. The application is a multilingual AI solution that aims to provide information based on the travel and tourism industry updates. With Bespoke's customers including Sendai International Airporrt, Tokyo Metro and Sofitel Hotels and Resorts. Read more.

Significant slowdown in the consumer DNA-testing market

Ancestry recently followed in the footsteps of 23andMe and decided to cut 6% of their workforce. With a spokesperson for Ancestry claiming that the decision "did not [come] lightly". With sales of consumer DNA tests slowing down it is thought that consumer privacy is one of the main driving factors. The cuts at Ancestry did not focus on a particular department. Staff from across several departments and disciplines, within the largest seller of at home DNA tests for health and genealogy, were let go.

CEO and president, Margo Georgiadis, confirmed that there was a slow down in demand for home DNA kits. Especially, now that early adopters were, most likely, already onboard. This news comes weeks after 23andMe, their main competitor, announced that they were to lay-off 14% of their staff because of lower than expected sales. Moving forward, it's thought that: innovative products and a drive to build consumer trust; will be two of the key ways in which the DNA-testing market will grow. Read more
