The Week That Was: Heather Valley and New Music

Monday, Feb. 10  - Scott Parks introduced our community to singer/songwriter Heather Valley (and hopefully a few of Heather's fans to us!) If you haven't heard this conversation/interview, which is unlike anything we've done on Suburbs Pod, hit play right now.

Tuesday, Feb. 11 - Steven Routledge was back on Tuesday, thank goodness. He talked new music from December and his favorite music from 2019.Then, we got all caught up on new music from January and finally with favorite music from 2019. Well worth your time, peoples.

Wednesday, Feb. 12 - We tidied up the 2019 favorites on Wednesday, because that's just the kind of peoples we are. You'll hear about Minus 5, Dollyrots, Munimuni and Michaela Anne today. And you get co-host Kevin Goff. Score!

Thursday, Feb. 13 -  Patrick went punk (well, he was already kinda there) for his new music picks from January, with one old, old school band (Wire) and one new, new school band (M80).

Friday, Feb. 14 - Celebrate Valentine's Day with Jim as he rolls out his always-tasty new music picks. In January he was digging Locate S,1 and Eyelids. We also got a second cover from Whyte Horses. Hit play peoples, hit play.

On Deck:  The Ones That got Away

Plus, classics from 1970 and some EPJ for your Friday.

Monday, Feb. 17  - The first two episodes this week are a lot of fun (and sometimes a lot of sad). We dive into concerts that our listeners missed, regret missing or just plain weren't able to make, even though they wanted to.

Tuesday, Feb. 18 - More tales of concerts that just didn't quite work out they way they were supposed to. And Bill Mulligan offers a nice twist on the concept.

Wednesday, Feb. 19 - Mailbag time! We reach deep into the listener correspondence bag and come up with some reactions to our shows on the music of 1984, Ken Burns' country music series and we get down with Durand Jones and the Indications.

Thursday, Feb. 20 -  Thanks to a very generous Patron (Mike Wagner), we were able to have a wonderful chat with Mackensi Crenshaw about music from 50 years back: 1970.

Friday, Feb. 21 - Three words peoples: Echo. Park. Jimmy.

Only 18 days left!

! LIVE SHOW ALERT !

LISTENER OF THE WEEK: DARLA SCHEEL
JOHNSON

She's waving hello like Art Garfunkel!

I live in … Moorhead MN

I am … a  part-time student for IT and cybersecurity, a part-time development associate with a non-profit, a part-time cellist with the Fargo Moorhead Symphony and a full-time mom to two daughters

I discovered “Rockin’ the Suburbs” by … browsing suggested podcasts on Spotify. Hooked immediately.

My favorite episodes are … the episodes about the Perfect Pop songs, and Echo Park Jimmy. I bore my daughter (extra points if her friends are in the car too) with endless analyzing of the top 40 music she makes me listen to.  Every now and then, there is a newish song that comes out that could constitute being on the perfect pop list. It’s rare but it happens. A current-ish song that could be on the list: Charlie Puth’s “The Way I Am.” The hook, the melody, the counter-melody- it’s pristine perfect pop.

My favorite artists are … Bruce Springsteen, Tame Impala, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Hall and Oates, Chris Stapleton, Bob Moses, Gary Clark Jr, Lana Del Rey, Prince, Stan Getz, Herb Alpert, the Clash, I could go on.

The first concert I saw was … New Kids on the Block, Tommy Page and Tiffany at the South Dakota State Fair, 1989 (I was 8). This was back when they would get stadium-level tours at the grandstand at the state fair! Vanilla Ice came the next year ,and that was pretty much it after that. Then in years following, it was more up-and-coming acts and definitely not pop music or rap, but country and classic rock.

Last concert I saw was … ELO, St Paul MN, July 2019

The best concert I saw was … Roger Waters’ The Wall, 2010, St. Paul MN

My favorite song is … “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” by Bruce Springsteen

I’ve never met any rock stars, but … Ricky Van Shelton waved at us driving his tour bus in rural South Dakota back in the mid-’90s. We were heading to the Black Hills for vacation. My parents also got waved at by Al Garfunkel in the mid-’70s while driving in central Nebraska.  A limo passed them and out pops this head with an unmistakable afro — and lo and behold it was Art Garfunkel.

 PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK >>>

This week was new music week on the pod, and while Jim and Patrick normally present two new selections each (plus two new covers), they normally have more than just a few selections to choose from. We thought we'd broaden the new music window for everyone by starting to put together a new music playlist each month to highlight some of those new tracks that don't make the show. And we're making it extra better by having the interns pitch in as well. Begin your new music journey NOW.

Last but Never Ever Least... Friday New Releases!

Our award-winning new release roundup is full of love for new platters, so grab your main squeeze and get down to your local record shop to grab a sack full of these fresh slabs o' wax. ♥️

Le Butcherettes - Don’t Bleed (Rise)
This seven-song EP by the buzzy alternative band switches between radio-ready and scratchy lo-fi. Give the people what they want, and a little bit of what they need.

Eyelids - The Accidental Falls (Jealous Butcher)
Hey, didn’t we just hear this band on the pod today? And now you can hear all the new music by this Portland indie outfit, with lyrics contributed by Larry Beckett. There’s joy. There’s sadness. All the feels.

Huey Lewis & the News - Weather (BMG)
The title of this album is a play on the band’s mega-huge 1983 breakthrough, Sports. But the name is appropriate in another way. A dark cloud hangs over the record, as Lewis was recently diagnosed with Meniere's disease, which rendered him unable to sing after these seven feel-good tunes were put to tape.

The Men - Mercy (Sacred Bones)
This Brooklyn band used to be more energetic. But then again, didn’t we all?

Shadow Show - Silhouettes (Burger)
You want some youthful energy, peoples? Check out this super groovy trio from Detroit. (And for even more energy, come spend some time with a similarly named puppy in the DC suburbs.)

Tami Neilson - Chickaboom! (Outside)
This singer calls herself “the hot rockin’ lady of country, rockabilly and soul.” That may sound like a bit much, but we offer this counterargument: Maybe it isn’t.

Tame Impala - The Slow Rush (Modular/Interscope)
This Australian indie act (the work of one Kevin Parker, really) started as an exploration in Beatlesque sonics. Lately, the music has become something more —  imbued with a more contemporary imprint, while retaining hallmarks of classic pop. If this is the sound of 2020, music is in pretty good shape.

Tennis - Swimmer (Mutually Detrimental/Thirty Tigers)
To call married couple Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore a modern-day Captain & Tennille initially seems wrong, but eventually seems right. What you take from that depends on you.

Fine Printz
